Jewish Press, page 4: Among the many
lovely parties honoring bride-elect Gertrude Shelley was a charming luncheon and
personal shower given in Beverly Hills by two of her friends there, Mrs. Sid
Cagan and Mrs. Lou Dolgin. It was
held on Saturday afternoon, November 29th with many Los Angeles
friends attending. After luncheon, the guests spent the afternoon playing cards.

Shelley) have returned from their honeymoon at Palm Springs and are now at home
to relatives and friends at 707 Seagirt Court in Mission Beach.
April 10, 1947—1) "U.J.F. Workers Stepping Up Pace—To Reach
Early Goal," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 1: With the Passover
holidays celebrating the release of Jews from bondage, drawing to a close, the
United Jewish Fund will intensify its campaign to raise $350,000 to provide
food, shelter, medical aid and clothing for the Jews of Europe. Max
Rabinowitz and Louis Steinman, chairmen of the campaign, announced that $000000 {Yes,
that misprint appeared in the paper} had been raised by the Jews of San
Diego which is more money than raised by the entire 1946 campaign. Eli
Levenson, president of the United Jewish Fund, and Nathan Baranov, honorary
chairman of the 1947 campaign, urged an all out effort to arouse the local
community to the widest support of the United Jewish Fund drive for $350,000 of
which approximately $300,000 will go to the United Jewish Appeal consisting of
the Joint Distribution Committee, the United Palestine Appeal and the United
Service for New Americans. The balance will be used for local and national
needs. Workers in the Trades and Industries Division, Women's Division and the
Young People's Division will be out calling on all prospects for their
contribution. The Young People's Division led by Renee Perlmutter and Sallie
Stone are showing the way, having raised $4335.00, $835.00 over their quota.
Trades and Industries have pledges amounting to $121,342.53, while the Women's
Division, with Julia Neumann and Bernice Soule at its head, have total pledges
of $18,587.50. "Coverage," the most important word in the
campaign, will come to life when the 2100 volunteer workers of the United Jewish
Fund go out in full force to reach their prospects. {The following list

2) "Organizations 'Working With' U.J.F.," Southwestern Jewish
Press, page 5: Complementing San Diego's Jewish organizations Max Rabinowitz
and Louis Steinman, chairman of the 1947 campaign, declared that most of the
Jewish organizations in San Diego are wholeheartedly cooperating and working
with the $350,000 United Jewish Fund Campaign. All Jewish organizations have
lessened their activities during the month of April and not only are working
with the United Jewish Fund but are giving up their April meetings to the
campaign. Many of the organizations have appointed chairmen committees so
they may more full participate in the drive. Mrs. Gertrude Thaler,
organizations chairman for the United Jewish Fund Campaign, announced that an
intensive drive would be made within organizations so that every member becomes
a subscriber to the fund...
3) "Junior B'nai B'rith Girls," Southwestern Jewish Press, page
5: All potential members and outside girls who are interested in having a good

April 24, 1947—"B.B Girls Announce Full Program," Southwestern
Jewish Press, page 7 -- Off to a bang-up start under their new advisor, Mrs.
Mort Thaler, the B.B. Girls held a joint meeting with the A.Z.A. Boys last
Wednesday night, April 16, at 8:30 at the Temple Center. Refreshments served by
the boys and dancing were enjoyed by all those who attended. One of the main
events planned jointly by the two organizations is a money-raising affair May
11th at Temple Center at 8:00. So plan to be there and be sure to buy a
ticket before they are all sold...
May 8, 1947—"Victor Schulman Heads Allocations,
Budget Committee," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 1: Eli Levenson,
president of the United Jewish Fund, announced the appointment of Victor
Schulman as chairman of the all important Allocations and Budget
Committee which will make recommendations for the distribution of money raised
in the 1947 United Jewish Campaign. For the first time in San Diego the
committee will consist of both board members and non-board members.
Appointed to serve with the chairman are: Sam Perlmutter, Abe Ratner, Abe
Snyder, Jack Dembo, I.L Domnitz, Abe Nasatir, Rabbi Morton Cohn, Max Rabinowitz,
Eve Chenkin, Leo Greenbaum, Frank Winicki, Gertrude Thaler, Sarah Goodrich,
Jennie Burnett, Bernice Soule, Julia Neumann, Julia Steiman, Louis Moorsteen,
Its Penter, Saul Schissell, Sandor Goldberger. Also, all members of the
Executive Committee will serve on the Allocations Committee. The Campaign
goes into its final two weeks with $182,966.50. Max Rabinowitz and Louis
Steinman, Chairman of the Campaign declared that there was still over $20,00.00
which had been contributed in 1946 and has not been received as yet in 1947. The
chairmen made an urgent appeal asking all who have not as yet contributed, not
to wait for the workers to see them but to send their contribution to the
office.
May 22, 1947—"Honored at Pre-Nuptial Affairs," Southwestern
Jewish Press, page 4: Miss Irma Strahl, whose marriage to William Ruden will
be an event of June 1st, was honored at a miscellaneous shower hostessed by Mrs.
Sam Spitalnick and Mrs. Sally Lieberamn at the former's home at 6709 Kelly Sreet
on Saturday evening, May 17th... May 28th, Wednesday evening, Mrs. Mort
Thaler will entertain at a kitchen shower for Miss Strahl. The affair
will be given at Mrs. Thaler's home on India Street.
June 19, 1947—"Junior B'nai B'rith Girls," Southwestern
Jewish Press, page 7: Swing and sway the B'nai B'rith way! That seems to be
the theme these days, since Lady Luck and Father Fortune have seen fit to smile
on this group with all their best efforts. First, the potluck dinner was not
only a sensational success, but seven new members were checked in. A few days
later, the Sr. B'nai Brith women assisted in successfully putting over a
terrific card party and enough money was raised to send Arleen Fleischman and
Shirley Roth and our advisor Mrs. Morton Thaler to the Jr. Girls'
Convention in L.A. on June 27th for four days, all expenses paid. Sincere
thanks to all those who came. The card party was given by the mothers of all the
Jr. Girls. The mothers contributed all refreshments and Mrs. Roth and Mrs.
Fleischman served from a beautifully arranged buffet table. Mrs. Florence Berman
co-advisor and Mrs. Thaler were on hand to greet all guests and they report a
most successful afternoon...
June 26, 1947—"Birdie Stodel B.B.," Southwestern Jewish
Press, page 6: At a regular meeting of the Birdie Stodel B'nai B'rith
Chapter No. 92 held Monday evening, June 23rd, at Temple Center at 8 p.m. the
main business of the evening was the giving of the reports of the recent Grand
Convention which was held in Fresno early this month... Program chairman Gertrude
Thaler reported that she has secured Rabbi Baruch Stern to be the guest
speaker for the next meeting on Monday, July 14th, at Temple Center. A
non-profit luncheon will be served at 12 noon.
July 10, 1947—"Notice To Our Readers," Southwestern Jewish
Press, page 1: For the next month Martha Feiler will perform the duties of
editor of the Southwestern Jewish Press, assisted by Gertrude Thaler, as
society editor. I am taking a leave of absence from the paper for this period,
and would very much appreciate the cooperation and courtesy of our readers

May 1949—"Tifereth Israel Sisterhood," Southwestern Jewish Press,
page 4: "Mother's Day" was the theme of the May meeting of the
Tifereth Israel Sisterhood. Mrs. Abe Ratner, assisted by Mrs. Monroe
Levens, arranged an unusual fashion display. Fashions for grandmother, mother
and daughter made available through the courtesy of the Sanford Dress Shop and
Chenkins Youth Center were previewed. Models were Mesdames Louis
Addelson,
Harris Rubel, Betty Solomon, Harry Mallen, Morton Thaler, Misses Andrea Beck,
Sherry Rae Newman, Elene Gordin and Pauline Ratner. Mesdames Sid Smith, Morris
Pomeranz, Lester Cooper, Fred Kaufman, Morris Levenson and Ben Mallen were
gracious hostesses.

Thaler, are arriving from Union City, N.J., to help celebrate [Mort and Gert's
daughter] Linda Louise Thaler's first birthday on June 10.

page 4: Mr. and Mrs. Morton Thaler had as their houseguests cousins Mrs. Wm.
Margolis and her sister, Mrs. Wm. Rothstein, of New York City. Mrs.
Margolis and Mrs. Rothstein, who were in San Diego for five weeks, were
entertained by their cousins here, Mrs. Anna Shelley, Mrs. Milton Rawdin and
Mrs. Julius Resiman. Before their return home, the sisters will spend some time
in Los Angeles visiting their brother, Mr. Phillip Jacobs and his family.

May 12, 1950—"Hadassah 'Mother-Daughter Luncheon
Great Success," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 7: An affair which
was, without a doubt, unprecedented for human interest and touching gratitude
was the "Mother-Daughter" luncheon meeting of Hadassah on Wednesday,
May 10th, at the Temple Center, honoring Mrs. Ida Nasatir, a much-loved and
worthy recipient. Depicting her life in a musical skit, the audience was
delighted with the ingenuity of the home-talent acting and singing. And not
least of those enjoying the afternoon was Ida herself, who could be seen smiling
throughout, we hope with approval. As further evidence of the love and respect
the organization holds for her (as if she needed more proof) Ida was presented
with a beautiful gift. Comprising the cast were Mmes victor Selten, David
Block, Max Gardner, Irvin Kahn, Joseph Kwint, Julius Levin, David Miller, Max
Rabinowitz, William Schwartz, Joseph Silverman, Al Slayan (sic, Slayen), Maxwell
Kaufman and Sigmund Stein. The skit was written by Gertrude Thaler and
Thelma Selten. Much enthusiasm bespoke the acceptance of the musical quartette,
composed of Mmes. Leo Beck, Lawrence Cantor, Edward Kitaen and Harry Mallen, as

May 26, 1950—1) "Hadassah Elects New Officers," Southwestern
Jewish Press, page 3: At the last luncheon meeting held on May 10th, the new
officers to serve the San Diego Chapter of Hadassah were elected. Heading the

2) "Beth Jacob Forms New Sisterhood," Southwestern
Jewish Press, page 4: With the advent of a new building which will house the
Synagogue and center for Beth Jacob, a new group within the structure of Beth
Jacob is being organized. A group of some fourteen ladies met at the home
of Mrs. Morrie S. Kraus recently to outline plans for the formation of a
Sisterhood. A temporary committee was chosen to outline plans for an affair to
acquaint the community with this new organization. Mrs. Morton Thaler, temporary
chairman, assiisted by Mesdames Julius Penn; Robert Strauss; Robert Penn; Morris
S. Kraus; Yale Kahn; William Penn; Ben Ornstein; A.A. Abramson; Arthur Gordon;
Jack Prager; Aubrey shulkind; Sidney O. Weiss; Alwin J. Feiler, who were the
nucleus attending the first meeting, have planned a Tea and Fashion Show to be
held on Thursday, June 1, 1950, at the San Diego Women's Club, Third and Maple
Avenues. The time is from 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.... In addition to the Fashion
Show, which is being presented by Hafter's, the principal speaker will be Mrs.
A.P. Nasatir. The committee has asked the wife of the spiritual leader of
Beth Jacob, Mrs. Baruch Stern, Mrs. Anna Shelley, president of the Ladies
Auxiliary, and the wives of the president of the Congregation's affiliates, Mrs.
A. A. Abramson, Congregation president; Mrs. J.H. Lipitt, P.T.A. president, and

July 21, 1950—1) "The Cradle," Southwestern Jewish Press, page
3: It's a boy for Mr. and Mrs. Morton Thaler! The good news is 7 pound 1 ounce,
Lawrence George who was born Saturday July 15 at 3:15 p.m. in Mercy Hospital.
Proud grandmothers are Mrs. George Shelley of San Deigo and Mrs. Lawes Thaler of
Jersey City, N.J. A Brith will be held Sunday July 23rd with Rabbi Baruch Stern
and Mr. Schwartz, Mohel, participating. Godparents are Mr. and Mrs. Moe Sherman
and Mr. and Mrs. Saul Goldstein of Jersey City, and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Kessler

The newest affiliate of Congregation Beth Jacob, the Beth Jacob Sisterhood,
recently held a luncheon meeting and election of officers took place. Mrs.
Julius Penn opened her charming spacious home in Point Loma for the luncheon and
meeting. Elected to guide the destinies of this new organization in the initial
year are: Mrs. Mortonjh Thaler, president; Mrs. Jack Prager, 1st vice president;
Mrs. Morris S. Kraus, 2nd vice president; Mrs. Aubrey Shulkind, 3rd vice
president; Mrs. Wm Penn, recording secretary; Mrs. Seymour Saltzman,
corresponding secretary, and Mrs. Julius Penn, financial secretary. Treasurer
will be Mrs. Robert Strauss and Mrs. Zel Camiel will be parliamentarian....
August 4, 1950—"Beth Jacob Sisterhood," Southwestern
Jewish Press, page 6: The first fund raising venture of the newly formed
Beth Jacob Sisterhood was a fine success. Under the capable chairmanship of
Dorothy Feinberg, assisted by cochairman Ethel Feldman, the card party held
recently in Beth Jacob Center netted a tidy sum to the treasury in addition to
its having been a pleasant evening for all who attended. Mrs. Thaler
publicly expresses her thanks to the committee chairman, the committee and
participants for their efforts and support...

fastest growing organization, invites its members and all other interested women

Morton Thaler, President, invites and urges the women of San Diego to come and
see the new home of Beth Jacob Congregation and to join in the good work being
done by this energetic group of women...

Jewish Press, page 5: Beth Jacob Sisterhood will hold its regular business
meeting at the Beth Jacob Center on Tuesday, December 26, at 12:30 p.m. Dessert
will be served and the business meeting will begin at 1:00 p.m. A social
afternoon of cards will follow and President Mrs. Morton Thaler urges all

Sisterhood will hold a social meeting on Tuesday evening January 23 at 8 p.m. at
the Beth Jacob Center. All members of the Beth Jacob Men's Club are invited to
attend with their wives and friends. Thee will be surprise entertainment
followed by dancing and refreshment at no charge. President Mrs. Gertrude
Thaler urges all members of both groups to attend and to bring their husbands,
wives and friends.
March 2, 1951—"'Festival of Spring' at Beth Jacob," Southwestern
Jewish Press, page 8: The Beth Jacob Sisterhood wishes to announce a
"Festival of Spring" (Bazaar) to be held on Sunday, March 4th, 4 p.m.
till midnight, at Beth Jacob Center, 4473 30th St. There will be games and
movies for the children, dinner for all the family, and special attractions for
adults. There will be no admission charge and all proceeds will benefit the new
Beth Jacob Synagogue and Center. Chairman in charge is Mrs. Robert S. Strauss,
co-chairmen are Mrs. Morrie Kraus, Mrs. Alfred Bobroff, and Mrs. Marvin Bobroff.
Home made baked goods and merchandise will be offered for sale in cleverly
decorated and arranged booths. Joan Bornstein of the Youth Group will be in
charge of the check room. The cartoons for children will be called "the B.J.
Theater." Mrs. Ben Elvolve will have charge of the men's attire booth, and
will call it "The Top Hat." Mrs. Ben Ornstein will have charge of the
women's booth, entitled "Curves, Inc." Aprons and artwork, named
"The Cotton Patch" is in charge of Mrs. Jos. Kaplan. The bakery booth,
called the "Ess 'n Ess," will be in charge of Mrs. Dave Schwartz. The
fortune teller booth, entitled "Madame Mystery," will be conducted by
Mrs. Sam Bloom. The clown and beanbag booth will be operated by Mrs. Jack
Brisker. The children's fishpond by Mrs. Marvin Bobroff. "Soch Haman
in the Eye," by Mrs. A. Abelson, Children's ready-to-wear booth, entitled
"Hoppy's Kiddie Corral," by Mrs. V. Dennis. Canned goods booth by Mrs.
Bernard Godes, will be called the "Chee-tums Pine Ridge Store." The
flower booth will be conducted by Mrs. Alfred Bobroff, will be called "Wee
Bouquet." Chairman in charge of the dining room and cafeteria is Mrs. Anna
Shelley, and in charge of serving, Mrs. Jerry Aronoff. President of the
Sisterhood, Mrs. Mort Thaler, urges all members and friends to attend and
assures all of a festive and happy time.
June 8, 1951—"Beth Jacob Synagogue," Southwestern Jewish
Press, page 4: ... Sisterhood Plans Installation — The Sisterhood will
hold a very impressive and informal installation of officers Tusday, June 26.
Luncheon will be served and everyone is cordially invited to attend. The
installation will be in a novel and light vein. Elected to office recently were
Kay Kraus, president; Ann Godes, first vice president; Mitzi Ornstein, second
vice president; Gwen Bobrof, third vice president; Frances Struass, treasurer;
Ruth Bobrof, financial secretary; Dorothy Penn, recording secretary; Rose Okmin,

June 22, 1951—"Beth Jacob Sisterhood," Southwestern Jewish
Press, page 6: The Sisterhood is extending an invitation to its many friends
to attend the 2nd Annual Installation of Officers on Tuesday, June 26, at 1 p.m.
at Beth Jacob Center. A dessert tea will follow the program which will feature
members of the teenage set. Mrs. Morton J. Cohn, charming wife of Temple
Beth Israel's spiritual leader, will install the officers who are: Pres., Mrs.

September 28, 1951—"Hadassah Exhibits Israel
Fashions In Style Show," Southwestern Jewish Press, pages 1, 23:
Hadassah launches its 1951-52 season next Friday, October 5th, with a
spectacular and unusual event—Fashion Forecasts from Israel....All clothes in
the show have been designed by artistic students at Hadassah's Fashion Institute
in Jerusalem...The Institute is supported entirely by Hadassah through its Child
Welfare—Youth Services Project. Mrs. Edward Schwartz is project Chairman
and she must raise $600 this year toward the National quota of $1,500,000.
Mrs. Berg cordially invites readers of the Press to join with Hadassah on
October 5th, at 12 noon in the Temple Center, 3rd and Laurel Sts., in reviewing

President, issues a cordial invitation to everyone in the community to hear a
stirring report of this best seller of past years. Mrs. Julius Penn, Luncheon
Chairman, announces that a delightfrully different luncheon will be served as a
belated welcome to the speaker. Mrs. Morton Thaler will present the program
which will also include selections by an outstanding young artist in local
musical circles. Reservations are necessary as an over-flow crowd is anticipated
and these may be made by telephoning Mrs. Lou Schissell or Mrs. Penn at B-1550.

'Festival of Spring,' Southwestern Jewish Press, page 3: Beth Jacob
Sisterhood again will present its Spring Festival on Sunday, February 24th, at
Beth Jacob Center starting at two o'clock and continuing until midnight with
entertainment promised for children and adults from 2 to 92. Mrs. Robert S.
Strauss, General Chairman, is being assisted by Mmes. Ben Elvone, Fritz Bobrof,
Bernard Godes, Marvin Bobrof and Morton Thaler, and from advance plans a
gigantic affair is promised the community...
2) "Ida Nasatir To Be Honored Guest," Southwestern
Jewish Press, page 6: The Beth Jacob Sisterhood wishes to remind everyone
that the luncheon in honor of Mrs. A.P. Nasatir is on February 13 noon. Tickets
are now available. Contact Mrs. Louis Schissel or Mrs. Julius Penn for
reservations. A book review of Steinberg's "As A Driven Leaf,"
presented by Mrs. Nasatir will highlight the afternoon's activities. Mrs. Morton
Thaler, program chairman, has also planned a musical treat. A well known local
artist will play selections. "A delightfully different luncheon" has
been promised by Mrs. Penn, luncheon chairman.
May 2, 1952—"Jack Gross Installs Hadassah Officers," Southwestern
Jewish Press, page 3: It's Donor Luncheon time again and in the usual
Hadassah manner it promises to be The Greates show on Earth ( with apologies to
Cecil B. {De Mille}). If schedules go unchanged, America's top Toastmaster
will be luncheon guest and entertainer. We can't divulge the "who" but
we can promise a show of shows. Mr. Jack Gross, genial civic leader and
1952 UJF campaign chairman, and, incidentally husband of member Loretta Gross,
will be featured speaker and installing officer. Mr. Gross has had a first hand
meeting with Hadassah's many projects in Israel and will bring to his audience a
stirring account of his recent travels through Israel. All facilities of Top's
restaurant have been made available for the afternoon affair which will commence
at 12 noon on Wednesday, May 21st, with Mrs. David Block as chairman and Mmes.
Alfred Bobrof, Harry Felson and Morton Thaler as her
co-chairmen. Mrs. Robert S. Strauss will be seated as President-elect with
an outstanding roster of new officers. This event will mark the end of an
outstanding two year term for retiring President, Mrs. E. Al Slayen. The entire
restaurant will be transformed into a rare garden glittering with gilt and
gorgeous floral displays. Mrs. Alfred Bobrof, Decorations Chairman, and her
committee have been working for weeks to insure a wondrous spectacle for all
guests. Her co-workers include Mmes. Joseph J. Kaplan, Edward Schwartz and
Marvin Bobrof with Mrs. Arthur Gardner in charge of the unusual favors which
each guest will receive. The afternoon's theme is "Orchids to You, Mrs.
Hadassah." All members should plan to attend this inspiring event.

6: The following is a copy of a letter received by Hadassah from Miss Ettilie
Wallace, Society Department, San Diego Union, in appreciation to the
organization for honoring her as the first recipient of the Ettilie Wallace
Civic Award for spreading the goodwill of the organization in our community by a
non-member, presented at Hadassah's Donor Luncheon, held last Wednesday at Top's
Restaurant. The Donor Committee feels that Miss Wallace's comments best express
the many praises heaped upon them and the entire organization for a "job
well done" and wish to take this opportunity to thank all the wonderful
guests who attended. "Dear Gertrude Thaler: I admit that the honor
Hadassah paid me Wednesday last, through you, had its disconcerting aspects for
me—I am NOT accustomed to being on the lens end of the camera! Also, because I
estimate your Hadassah cause as truly good; because you handle all with
enthusiasm and efficiency; and, because your gracious members take such pretty
pictures, I consider it an honor to have such worthy material to put together
for a Page One spot, so, at first I did not know how to "wrap-up" a
by-product honor. But I have thought on it very much and now I would like to
repeat what I said that day —"I like the trees"—I like to think
that man recognizes his kinship with nature enough to take on so beautiful, so
healing, so foresighted a project as the planting of a forest. So the form of
the honor is most comfortable. And the gesture itself, I take it and the gift of
the rare orchid as symbols of the kindness that makes us kin—the kindness, the
kinness that all men must learn by heart as well as heat. Apreciatively,
