June 26, 1947—Eli Levenson Elected to Executive Comm. of B'nai B'rith," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 1: San Diego comes to the fore i national B'nai B'rith activities with the election of Eli Levenson, prominent local attorney to the Executive Committee of Grand Lodge, District No. 4 of B'nai B'rith. The election of Grand Lodge officers and the Committee was a high point in the recent Convention held in Fresno.  A past president of Lasker Lodge B'nai B'rtih, Mr. Levenson has long been active in many community projects, both Jewish and non-Jewish. At present he is the president of the United Jewish Fund of San Diego.  This Executive Committee, which meets three times annually, generally in San Francisco, serves the District as an interim committee between Conventions. It guides the policies of B'nai B'rith and makes any procedure or law changes it deems advisable and beneficial for the continued success of the work. Additional minor duties consist of visits to various Lodges in designated areas, and making decisions on any problems a Lodge might have. During the year, Mr. Levenson will make such visits to many neighboring Lodges, and undoubtedly discharge his duties with accuracy and acclaim.  Other Lasker Lodge members who attended the Convention as delegates were Morrie Douglas, president; Edward A. Breitbard, William B. Schwartz, and Marshall Naiman. Jack Dembo was there in the capacity of Alternate.  Delegate at large was past Grand President Henry Weinberger and Morrie Kraus attended as a lay member.

The main honor to Lasker Lodge was the election of Eli Levenson, a past president, to the Executive Committee of Grand Lodge District No. 4 and the appointment of Morrie Kraus, local Hillel Chairman to the District's Hillel Committee.  Two hundred seventy-two delegates from eight Western States and British Columbia were in attendance at the Convention. The delegates reported on the overwhelming enthusiasm of all members present for the continuance of the expansion of all points of the eight-point B'nai B'rith program. Mention was made of the $100.00 which was donated by the Lasker Lodge to the Hillel Foundation of the University of Washington in Seattle and the impressive solemn service held for the late Henry Mosky, who was Supreme President of B'nai B'rith at the time of his death last May, was described. Henry Weinberger gave his report on the Supreme Grand Lodge Convention which was held in Washington D.C. All members at Monday evening's meeting commended the delegates, who were Morrie Douglas, Eddie Breitbard, Wm Schwartz, Eli Levenson and Marshall Naiman as well as alternate Jack Dembo, delegate-at-large Henry Weinberger and laymember Morrie Kraus for their fine work at the convention.

July 1949—"Clubs in Review: Lasker Lodge B'nai B'rith," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 1: The progress of the San Diego Lasker Lodge, No. 370, B'nai B'rith, since the beginning of the year and under a new administration, has been steady and satisfactory. Under the able and level-headed guidance of prexy William B. Schwartz, activities and facets of Bnai B'rith have shown a  marked improvement.  Officers for 1949 are as follows: Wiilliam B. Schwartz, president; Morris S. Kraus, first vice president; Jerome P. Freedman, second vice president; Ralph Feldman, warden; Lou Mogy, guardian; Sam Kimmel, recording secretary; Edward Baranov; financial secretary; Al Doctor, treasurer; Zel Greenberg, Manny Silberman, Jack Dembo, Marshall Naiman, and Sidney Goldstein, trustees; Edward Breitbard, chaplain; Morrie Douglas, grand lodge deputy; Eli Levenson is a member of the grand lodge executive committee and the lodge has a past grand president in the person of Henry Weinberger.  Highlights of activities of the present administration to date were the installation of officers at the El Cortez Jan. 16; the progress of the newly established Boy Scout troop, under the leadership of Sid Smith, Ed Breitbard, Dave Solof and Lou Levitt, to mention just a few; and the tremendous impetus given and achieved by the AZA under direction of Harry Wax and Bert Strauss.  Other activities included the fine work of the retention committee under Al Doctor; the Boy Scout window display context, in which 57 windows were entered and won by Ted Schiller; speakers Dr. Stuart Cole, executive director of the Pacific Coast Council on Intercultural activities, and Maurice Hamburger, district membership director; athletics under Lou Mogy which included the softball league and the highly successful bowling league under Sam Bennett and Harry Addis, and the forthcoming golf tournament under chairman Danny Schwartz. Not to be outdone by its predecessor, the second annual Fathers and Sons night was a howling and huge success. All the boys were again given miniature bats and it was one of the most unforgettable events in the lodge. The event was chaired by Morrie Douglas, greatly aided by a large and hard-working committee. Hillel, in its second year, achieved even greater success and recognition on San Diego State's campus with its intercultural and interfaith programs, ably supervised by Gil Shatz and Manny Silberman. A new project under this administration was the formation of an initiatory degree team headed by Sid Goldstein, Harry Mallen and Milt Roberts, which will give its first performance at the July 11 meeting. On April 11 the lodge held its first B'nai B'rith Cavalcade, headed by Ed Solomon, at which all past presidents of the lodge were honored, as well as 25-year members, and those members who had obtained 10 or more new applicants. The lodge was further honored when past president Ed Breitbard was elected as second vice-president of the So. Calif. B'nai B'rith Council. Many activities that have been planned in the past will soon begin to jell, among which will be a theatre party, an exclusive dinner-dance for members, and cultural evenings. Limitation of space precluded mentioning the many more programs accomplished and those anticipated. All in all, when this administration ends, the community will be proud of the achievements and record of San Diego Lasker Lodge during 1949—Morrie Kraus.

September 1949— 1) "Congress Chapter Inaugurated Here," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 4: A new American Jewish Congress chapter is being formed in San Diego. Members of the community interested in the work of the Congress met at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A. Louis Solof Thursday, August 25.  Rabbi Leonard A. Greenberg of Los Angeles, Pacific Coast field representative of the A.J.C. led discussion on A.J.C. claims and philosophy. Rabbi Greenberg introduced Mel Springer, publisher of the Valley Jewish News, North Hollywood, chairman of the Southern California administrative committee as guest speaker, who told of the forming of Congress 33 years ago by Rabbi Stephen S. Wise and Louis Lipsky, and of its steady progress to the present day. "For the past eight years A.J.C. has taken a more active and militant stand on discrimination, Springer said, leading the way for other American groups. Through its Law and Social Order program, the Congress has attacked anti-Semitism from a constructive angle, fighting this scourge through the courts when necessary. Assuming that discrimination is in reality an attack on democracy, its legal department is ready to champion minority groups of all colors and creeds, banding together for protection against bigotry at all times." Springer told the group of the exceptional educational program; its Office of Jewish Information, a bi-monthly: "The Congress Weekly," outstanding Jewish publication, edited by J.L. Teller, formerly editor of the Independent Jewish Press Service. A.J.C. worked untiringly for the realization of the State of Israel, and is now concentrating on the denazification program in Germany, which is taking an alarming turn. During the past few years many chapters have been formed throughout the nation. In California, Los Angeles leads with thirty-five active chapters, San Francisco and San Jose have recently joined the region, which is headed by Judge Ben Rosenthal and Rabbi Max Nussbaum of Los Angeles. Meeting at the Solof home were Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Solomon, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Pollack, Mr. and Mrs. William Roberts, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Schwartz, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Wosk, Hillel Arkin, Mrs. Eva Arkin, Raymond Bass, Oscar Dubowsky, Henry Price, Morrie Douglas, Manny Haffner and Dr. Walter Ornstein. February 24, 1950— "Allocations Committee Sets New Pattern," Southwestern Jewish Press, pages 1, 8: In an all day session of the 1950 Allocations Committee, held last Sunday at the El Cortez Hotel, a new precedent in disbursing monies to be raised was set for the San Diego Jewish Community. For the first time, budgeting has been done prior to the campaign so that the contributor will know how the money would be distributed. The committee consisting of members of the Board of Directors of the Fund, organization presidents and members at large, formulated a pattern for the distribution of  money raised in the 1950 campaign.  Sol Price, chairman of the committee, announced that of the first $150,000 raised, 83 percent was allocated for the United Jewish Appeal and other Israel overseas agencies, 10 percent to local agencies and 7 percent to national agencies. Of the next $50,000, 95 percent to the United Jewish Appeal and other overseas and Israel agencies, and 5 percent to national agencies.  All over this amount would go to the United Jewish Appeal. According to Price's announcement the following organizations will be beneficiaries of the 1950 campaign: United Jewish Appeal, Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, Jewish Telegraphic Agency, American Friends of the Hebrew University, American Committee for the Weizmann Institute of Science, American Technion Society, American Fund for Israel Institutions, National Committee for Labor Israel (Histadrut), City of Hope—JCRA, Jewish Committee for Personal Service, Leo M. Levi Memorial Hospital, American Jewish Congress, Jewish Labor Committee, Joint Defense Appeal, B'nai B'rith National Youth Services Appeal; Yiddish Scientific Institute, American Association for Jewish Education, Jewish War Veterans of the United States, National Jewish Welfare Board, Synagogue Council of  America, Training Bureau of Communal Service, Hebrew Theological College, Jewish Theological Seminary, American Hebrew Congregations, Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America, Yeshiva University. The Allocations Committee heard Mr. Moritz Gottlieb, lay leader of Allentown, Pa., representing the United Jewish Appeal, state that in 1949 San Diego, in giving 88 percent of the monies raised through the United Jewish Appeal, had done an outstanding job and that there were not too many communities which had shouldered their responsibilities as well. Rabbi Leonard Greenberg, Los Angeles , spoke for the American Jewish Congress. Histadrut's spokesman was Sol Goodman, while Murray Goodrich represented the American Fund for Israel Institutions. Henry Weinberger presented the case for B'nai B'rith Youth Service Appeal.  Members of the Allocations Committee, besides Price, were Victor Schulman, Rose Neumann, Henry Weinberger, Ben Harris, Ben Feinberg, Harry Engel, Sol Goodman, Mrs. Dora Richlin, M.S. The Young People's Division will be set up in the very near future. Captains and lieutenants of divisions, secured to date, read like a roster of leading citizens in the Jewish Community of San Diego. The Weizmann Division will be sparked by Louis Moorsteen, Its Penter, Louis Steinman, Ralph Hosenpud, Harry Snyder, Rod Horrow and Nate Baranov. Haganah Division will be officered by Sam Rassin, M.S. The Commando Division to handle "Special Assignments" will have Max Rabinowitz, Harry Farb, Henry Weinberger, Saul Chenkin, Carl Esenoff and Victor Schulman as its leaders. The Professional Division will include Judge Jacob Weinberger, Dr. R.M. Stone, Dr. J.A. Rittoff, Dr. Fred Hollander, Ben Rubin, Carl Esenoff and John Ruskin. Cabinet members for the campaign to act as advisers to the chairmen were announced last week.  The Campaign Cabinet will consist of Murray D. Goodrich and Nate Ratner, chairmen of the 1950 campaign. Victor Schulman, Eli Levenson, Saul Chenkin, Max Rabinowitz, Louis Steinman, Rodin Horrow, Morris Douglas and Sol Price. The 1950 Campaign, "To Keep the Miracle Alive" will have a goal of $283,000 based on minimum needs of the 38 Overseas, Israel, National and Local Agencies participating in the drive. The goal is the absolute minimum and must be raised if San Diego Jewry is to assume its responsibility in this cause.  This year, as never before, plans are under way for the complete coverage of the entire Jewish Community of San Diego County.  Everyone will have an opportunity to help shoulder their responsibility in this great national cause.  More workers will be needed than ever before, according to Goodrich and Ratner, so that complete coverage may be effected. Organizations have been asked to provide workers and anyone wishing to volunteer may do so by calling Franklin 0171.  All community minded Jews are asked to participate by giving and working in the "Keep the Miracle Alive" 1950 Campaign, which will open in early April.

April 28, 1950—
1) "$100,000 Mark for United Jewish Fund Reached in April," Southwestern Jewish Press, pages 1, 14: In the first two weeks of the campaign to "Keep the Miracle Alive," one third of the $283,000 has been secured, reported Murray D. Goodrich and Nathaniel Ratner, General Campaign Co-Chairman.  Over $95,000 had been raised by April 24th, two weeks from the start of the campaign, from less than 400 subscribers, according to the report which was given at a workers meeting held last week. The chairmen were convinced that they would reach the first step of their goal, which was to have over $100,000 by April 30th. "On all fronts the campaign is moving forward in a very satisfactory and enthusiastic fashion," Goodrich and Ratner said. They pointed to the outstanding work of Elmer Glaser of Oceanside, who at the last meeting reported over a 100 percent increase with $1800 collected to date, as compared to $890 in the entire 1949 campaign.  Arthur L. Cohen, Chairman of the Coronado Campaign, showed not only increased contributions, but much wider coverage. William Schwartz and Jerome Freedman, Chairmen of the el Cajon, La Mesa and Grossmont District, reported an almost completed job, showing no cuts and several increases .In the Women's Division report, presented by Selma Getz, $12,500 had been secured from 30 women at an advanced gift luncheon held last week, and addressed by Ida Nasatir. As we go to press, we do not have the results of the large Women's Division Luncheon held yesterday at the El Cortez Hotel, but every indication points to the fact that it will exceed last years Women's Division effort.  Religious School Children of Temple Beth Israel and Tifereth Israel sparked the opening of the Young People's Division of the United Jewish Fund last week. The boys and girls of Beth Israel presented a check for $242.56 to Mrs. Arthur Goodman, Co-chairman of the Young People's Division and Herbert Solomon, in which all religious school collections were contributed to "Keep the Miracle Alive."  Tifereth Irael Youngsters pledged $150 of their Ts'dakah funds for the 1950 drive, both contributions exceeded thier 1949 gifts.  According to Mrs. Goodman, Dave Anfanger and Dick Silberman, Co-chairmen of the Young People's Division of the campaign, as far as the Youths of San Diego are concerned, the drive has just begun to roll. Mrs. Goodman reported a most successful luncheon for young women held last Saturday. On the same evening, the opening gun of the Young People's Division was fired with a dinner dance attended by over 100, and addressed by Ernst Michel, young emigre, who told of the needs of the United Jewish Appeal.  As a pre-campaign meeting for the Young People's Division, a Sports Night was held under the leadership of Dave Anfanger, for Junior High School boys, some 50 youngster made their contribution at that meeting. Scout Troops 99 and 15 participated.  Norman Holtzman, Al Davidson, Mitzi Schiller, Herb Solomon, Ben Press, Joan Steinman, Sid Stokes, Sylvia Winicki, Fran Winicki, Howard Esterson, Joe Yaffee and LeeWinicki are active leaders in the Young People's Division, which on the opening day raised almost $2,000. The Christian Committee under the leadership of Charles Davies, chairman; Bishop Buddy and Dr. Thomas Coyle, co-chairmen, reported that they had secured $5,461 from Christian gifts in San Diego and that they are anticipating many additional gifts.  Goodrich and Ratner urge every man, woman and child in San Diego to become a giver.  Work on the Magic Carpet but if you cannot be a modern magician stay at home and make your contribution to the miracle worker who calls on you on Sunday April 30th.

2) "Magic Carpet Day, Sunday, April 30th: Be A Worker or Stay at Home Until A Worker Calls on You," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 16:  Over 150 "Modern Miracle Workers" are expected to participate in San Diego's "Operation Magic Carpet" this Sunday, April 30th, Morris Douglas, chairman of the day, stated. Gathering for instructions at Beth Israel Center, the workers will breakfast (courtesy of the Jolly Sixteen) at 9:30 a.m., receive their lists and be off to knock on doors on behalf of the "Keep the Miracle Alive" Campaign of the United Jewish Fund.  "Magic Carpet Day," said Douglas, "is an effort to dramatically call to the attention of the Jews of San Diego, the needs of the Jews of Europe, Africa and the Moslem countries, as well as Israel, and to have the greatest possible coverage in the history of any campaign. We hope that our Miracle Workers will cover over 1200 prospects on this one day."  All organizations have helped in the recruitment of workers. To date, the following workers have signed their pledge to be the crew of the "Magic Carpet":  Rose Abrams, A.A. Abramson, Sam Addleson, Manny Adler, E. S. Entering at the same time and looking as cool as a cucumber was Albert Dekker, whose brilliant piece of acting was the cause of my breakdown. Did my eyes deceive me or was the couple with him my dear, dear friends Bill Schwartz and his wife?  Another coincidence...I just couldn't find a place to sit, so good old Bill graciously offered me his lap. Adjusting the feather on my hat to the correct wave length, and staring into the eyes of Albert, Louella Kaufman got busy. I threw a leading question, "How many years did you have to suffer, pounding pavements and knocking down, I mean on, Agency doors?" Mr. Dekker laughed with kindly indulgence. "The Theatre Guild came after ME while I was still a medical student."  Surely he must have had an unhappy childhood in the slums of New York.  No, his father was a successful attorney. Something was going wrong with the interview. I shifted to Bill's other knee. "Don't you prefer the theatre to working in Hollywood?" I couldn't miss here, everyone from the Theatre Guild hated the Cinema. Taking a mouthful of pancake, Mr. Dekker threw away my last hope. He liked to eat; he loved being with his family; he loved Hollywood. Oh, well, I tried. I can't help it if Albert Dekker's an honest man...

January 19, 1951—"Committee Plans Largest Fund Drive for '51," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 1: Plans are now being formulated by the Campaign Committee for San Diego's largest fund raising drive. Made up of Past Campaign Chairmen, the Advisory Committee has the responsibility of setting up the plans for the 1951 Campaign and for assisting in the selection of the Chairmen.... Although the Allocations Committee, under the chairmanship of William Schwartz, has not as yet met, it is assumed that local and national agencies will join the United Jewish Appeal as beneficiaries of the 1951 campaign.

February 16, 1951—"April 1 Target Date for Fund Drive," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 1: Appointment of the chairmen for the 1951 Campaign of San Diego's United Jewish Fund will be announced in the next issue of the Press, according to Victor Schulman, Fund president. Target date for the opening of the Combined Jewish Appeal for overseas, national and local needs will be April 1st, with Sunday April 29th planned for the one-day solicitation in which San Diego gained national acclaim in 1950. Reports from William Schwartz, Chairman of the Allocations Committee, indicate that pre-campaign planning, on a percentage basis as accomplished in 1950, will be followed again in 1951. Four major fields of service will be included, according to Schwartz, in the 1951 Campaign—Overseas and Israel, National Agencies, Local Needs, and the Emigre Program.  Carl Esenoff, San Diego Federation of Jewish Agencies Leader, stated that local budgets would be presented to the fund at its next meeting for inclusion in the 1951 Campaign. Local organizations, deficit financed through the Federation and Fund in 1950, were the Jewish Welfare Society, $4260; San Diego Hebrew Home for the Aged, $2880; The Community Center Association, $3500; Jewish Education Commission $170; and the Community Relations Council, $1800. The cost of the Emigre project was $11,000.  Schwartz announced the complete roster of the Allocations Committee as follows: Dr. Robert M. Stone, Louis Moorsteen, Eli H. Levenson, Mrs. Gabriel Berg, Sol Price, Abe Ratner, Mr. David Block, Mrs. Saul Chenkin, Max Rabinowitz, Morris Kraus, Arthur Gardner, Ray Bass, and Harry Snyder.

June 8, 1951—"U.J.F. Threatens Cuts If Quota Not Reached," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 1: $23,900 may have to be cut off allocations to Overseas, National and local agencies by the United Jewish Fund.  This was the startling announcement made by Victor Schulman, president of the Fund as the campaign chairmen announced that the $200,000 mark had been passed this week. "Though this campaign has been gratifying in that it has exceeded 1950 by 9 percent to date, it is disappointing in the number of contributors. Slightly over 1200 pledges have been received this year in comparison to 1650 in 1950," stated the general campaign co-chairmen, (Rodin) Horrow and (Morris) Douglas. Campaign leaders are continuing the effort to reach the commitment of $233,920 needed for minimum needs of the 38 organizations which are beneficiaries of the Fund. Personal solicitation will continue as well as an intensification of mailings to those who have not as yet contributed... President Schulman announced that the allocations committee, chaired by William Schwartz, would begin to meet during the summer months to make recommendations for the distribution of the money raised in the campaign. Major beneficiary again will be the United Jewish Appeal, consisting of the United Palestine Appeal, Joint Distribution Committee, and the United Service for New Americans, Histadrut and the Joint Defense Appeal of the American Jewish Committee. The B'nai B'rith Anti-Defamation League will also receive a major share. San Diego's Displaced Persons Program and the Federation of Jewish agencies will be among the beneficiaries.

July 6, 1951—"Fund Drive Exceeds '49 and '50 Results," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 1: The task of studying budget requests of the various beneficiary agencies of the United Jewish Fund of San Diego will start shortly, it was announced this week. In preparation for this undertaking, Chairman William Schwartz of the Allocation Committee, is preparing the material to be sent to all members of the committee, who were appointed by Victor Schulman before the 1951 Campaign opened.  Members of the committee assisting Chairman Schwartz are Dr. R.M. Stone, Louis Moorsteen, Eli H. Levenson, Mrs. Gabriel Berg, Sol Price, Abe Ratner, Arthur Gardner, Harry Snyder and Rubin Umansky, members of the Fund Board of Directors. Other members are Mrs. David Block, Mrs. Saul Chenkin, Max Rabinowitz, Morris Kraus and Ray Bass. Additional members will be announced in the future...

July 20, 1951—"U.J.F. Continues Plea for Funds," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 1: San Diego was listed among the 12 major communities which have surpassed their 1950 campaign according to a release from the National United Jewish Appeal. Rodin Horrow and Morrie Douglas states that the 1951 campaign has exceeded 1950 by 9 percent but it is anticipated that at least a 15 percent increase is expected. While efforts continue to get the balance of pledges in, preparation is being made for the first meeting of the Allocations Committee in August. Unless the minimum commitments are reached the Allocation Committee will be faced with the problem of which agencies to cut, Chairman William Schwartz stated.  If you have not made your contribution to the United Jewish Fund 1951 Combined Jewish Appeal, do so immediately, without waiting to be called upon, so that each beneficiary agency will get a fair share.

August 17, 1951—"$6,000 Sought by Special Committee," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 1: With distribution of the $204,000 to be made in September by the Allocations Committee under the chairmanship of William Schwartz, a special campaign committee will also begin work in September, to add $6,000 to the total and bring the campaign figure to $210,000.00. Though the 1951 campaign proportionately was the best on the coast and in the Southwest, campaign leaders were not at all satisfied, according to Rodin Horrow and Morrie Douglas, General Campaign Co-Chairmen.  "We know," they said, "that San Diego Jewry can easily reach $210,000 and we will do so before the end of the year. It is necessary that we reach at least this figure so that the Allocations Committee will be able to properly distribute money to all of the agencies to whom commitments have been made. Fund Treasurer Nathaniel Ratner continues to call for cash and pledges in order to meet commitments made to agencies and to banks. Besides making almost a full payment to the United Jewish Appeal because of their urgent need for cash, Ratner stated that a partial payment had been made to Histadrut, which had joined as a beneficiary of the 1951 campaign. He urged every contributor to send their cash to the United Jewish Fund office now.

September 14, 1951—"U.J.F. Allocations Committee Plans Distribution of Funds," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 5: Sunday, September 23 is the date set by the Allocations Committee for its open hearing, according to William Schwartz, Chairman. It is expected that the representatives of many of the requesting agencies will present their cases before the committee at the meeting to be held at the El Cortez Hotel. Approximately $150,000 of the $204,000 raised in the Combine Jewish Appeal for 1951 will be distributed by the Fund Board of Directors based on the recommendations that will come out of the Allocations Committee discussions. Chairman Schwartz stated that the committee had approved the open hearing, as well as the division of the Committee into subcommittees to study various categories of agencies. Sub-committees appointed by the chairman are as follows: Cultural-Health and Welfare, Sol Price (Chairman), Mrs. M.D. Goodrich, Mrs. Gabriel Berg, Dr. R.M. Stone; Service and Community Relations, Rubin Umansky (Chairman), Morris Douglas, Rodin Horrow, Mrs. Abe Ratner; Overseas and Israel, Mrs. David Block (Chairman), Morris Kraus, Eli Levenson and Harry Snyder; Religious Agencies, Mrs. Saul Chenkin (Chairman), Ray Bass, Louis Moorsteen, and Arthur Gardner.  There may be more money to allocate according to a report from Rodin Horrow and Morris Douglas, campaign Co-Chairmen, who stated that since the effort to raise an additional $6,000 started on September 1st, $1500 in new and increased pledges have already been secured. Their hope is to raise $210,000 by the end of the year.

September 28, 1951—"Welfare Fund's Budget Body To Meet For Final Study," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 1: More than a dozen national and overseas agencies submitted their requests for allocations from the United Jewish Fund to the Allocations Committee last Sunday.  Meeting at the El Cortez Hotel for over five hours, the Committee headed by William Schwartz heard representatives of the United Jewish Appeal; the Jewish Labor Committee; the Joint Defense Appeal; Jewish War Veterans; the U.I.T. Campaign for the Hebrew University; the Weizmann Institute, and Technion; American Funds for Israel Institutions; National Jewish Welfare Board, and the City of Hope tell the needs of the respective beneficiary.  The entire membership of the Budget Committee of San Diego's United Jewish Fund will meet again to receive the reports of its various sub-committees which will have completed their studies of the budget requests of beneficiary agencies. After the full Committee has completed all of its recommendations, they will be presented to the Board of Directors of the United Jewish Fund for final decision.  The Directors will meet on Wednesday, October 17, for this purpose.

October 26, 1951—"Fund Board Approves Allocation Report: Distributes $143,000." Southwestern Jewish Press, pages 1,5: Over $143,000 was distributed to non-local agencies last week by the directors of the United Jewish Fund at their regular October meeting, according to Victor Schulman, President. Included in the amount distributed is $10,475.00, available surplus from 1950, which had not been allocated in that year. Nathaniel Ratner, Treasurer of the Fund, stated that under the present regulations of the United Jewish Fund all available surplus must be distributed.  Based on the report and recommendations of the 1951 Allocations Committee, headed by William Schwartz, the board distributed $131,240 to overseas and Israel agencies in comparison with $124,500 in 1950. Community Relations agencies remain almost the same as in 1950. Religious institutions were allocated $2,483, an overall increase of $305. Cultural agencies remained about the same, and Service and Coordinating agencies increased from $1,613 to $2.555. "$272,146.00 Goal Set for S.D.; Fund Answers Plea by Setting 1948 Level: Mogy and Schwartz Manpower Chairmen," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 1: In response to a call from the United Jewish Appeal to Jewish communities of America to meet their responsibility in 1952 by raising the same monies as in 1948, the Board of the United Jewish Fund, at a meeting held earlier this week, set the goal for the combined Jewish Appeal Campaign at $272,146.00, the exact amount raised in 1948.  "Though this represents an increase of 30 percent over 1951, my co-chairmen and I," said Jack Gross, "have faith in the Jews of San Diego answering the desperate plea of their brethren overseas. we are confident that every Jew in San Diego will play his part in this great cause." The formal announcement of the April 1st opening of the United Jewish Fund's Combined Jewish Appeal for 1952 put organization plans into high gear as Jack Gross and his Chairmen announced the appointment of William Schwartz and Louis Mogy as Manpower Mobilization Chairmen. Organizations cooperating in the campaign have already begun the appointment of their chairmen: Philip Abrams for the Cottage of Israel; William Schwartz for Lasker Lodge B'nai B'rith; Sam Addleson for Congregation Tifereth Israel; and Mrs. Ann Godes for Beth Jacob Sisterhood. The Labor Zionists have selected Fred Yaruss, and the City of Hope Auxiliary appointed Sophie Himmel.  Other appointments were Mrs. Albert Hutler for Temple Beth Israel Sisterhood; John Kluchin and Irving Cohen, Samuel I Fox Lodge B'nai B'rith; Mrs. Edgar Levi, National Council of Jewish Women, and Mrs. Rose Brooker, Pioneer Women Negba Club. Mogy and Schwartz are both past-presidents of B'nai B'rith and active in civic affairs. They will begin recruiting workers through organizations and personal contacts, urging everyone to join in the effort on behalf of local, national and overseas organizations as well as Israel.  In a message to (Jack) Gross, (Harry) Snyder, (Louis) Moorsteen and (Sol) Price, campaign leaders, Edward N. Warburg, general chairman of the UJA pointed out that "Israel today is fighting a desperate battle to achieve victory over austerity, shortages, inflations and under production." He called upon San Diego "to match this year's entire United Jewish Appeal Drive with that of 1948 when it raised $272,146.00."  The current nationwide United Jewish Appeal Campaign will be launched officially February 24th in Miami Beach.

May 2, 1952—"Magic Carpet Day May 18th U.J.F.: Drive Drags Feet—" (possibly a typographically reversed headline: 'UJF: Drive Drags Feet—Magic Carpet Day May 18th,"), Southwestern Jewish Press, page 1:  Magic Carpet Day—Sunday, May 18—takes its place as the next big event in the fast moving campaign of San Diego's United Jewish Fund.  A tradition of San Diego's drives, "magic Carpet Day" under the joint chairmanship of William Schwartz and Lou Mogy will be marked by door to door solicitations of every neighborhood in the city in the hope of securing contributions from those who have not yet pledged...."Reports are most encouraging," Jack Gross, Chairman and his Co-Chairmen, Sol Price, Lou Moorsteen and Harry Snyder, stated, "and increased contributions are being reported from all sections. However, it is necessary that we accelerate our efforts if we are to achieve our campaign goal—free money for U.J.A. investment money for Israel; money for national and local agencies..."

May 16, 1952—"'A Million People To Knock on Your Door' Sunday," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 1: Approximately 200 volunteer canvassers will visit more than 1,000 Jewish homes all over the city this Sunday for the biggest Magic Carpet Day solicitation ever held by the United Jewish Fund of San Diego, according to William Schwartz and Lou Mogy, C0chairman of this day.  The events of the day will begin with a breakfast at 9:00 a.m. at Beth Israel Temple Center, followed by an instruction period beginning at 9:30 a.m.; the formation of teams to solicit every Jewish family who has not made a contribution to the Combined Jewish Appeal as yet; and at 10:30 all of the workers will spread out to cover the city. Breakfast will be furnished by the Bohemian Rye Bakery and be served by the members of the Jolly Sixteen. Instructions will be under the direction of Schwartz and Mogy, with the blessing being given by Rabbi Morton J. Cohn, spiritual leader at Beth Israel.  All prospective contributors are urged to stay at home Sunday, May 18, between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. or until they are called upon for tier pledge. Each Magic Carpet Day workers will have an identification card and tickets to the gala "Victory Ball," which is to be held on Saturday, May 24, at the San Diego Hotel from 9:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. Workers will present each contributor with a ticket to the dance. Coincident with the appeal for workers for Magic Carpet Day and the urging of all who have not as yet made a contribution to remain at home until called upon. Campaign Headquarters announced that all contributions received thus far since the beginning of the drive has reached a total of $175,000.00 and still remains 10 percent ahead of the 1951 campaign.

May 30, 1952—"Fund Rushes $25,000 to Meet U.J.A. Crisis; 'Campaign is Successful'—Jack Gross," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 1:  Answering promptly the emergency pleas of the United Jewish Appeal for cash to meet spiraling Jewish needs for Israel and other parts of the world, the United Jewish Fund of San Diego last week forwarded $25,000 for transmittal to the United Jewish Appeal. This makes a total of $75,000 remitted by the Fund this year to the UJA—$50,000 having been paid last March. On the basis of the cash needs of the United Jewish Appeal, Jack Gross, chairman; Louis Moorsteen, Sol Price and Harry Snyder, co-chairmen of the Fund campaign, this week called upon those who have not as yet pledged to make their contributions at once so that if necessary additional monies may be borrowed to meet the present crisis. "We are most thankful to all those who have pledged subscriptions to the present campaign," Gross said, "but the 350 who have not yet pledged total almost $30,000 which must come in if we are to do our job of raising at least 10 percent more than we did in 1951."  At this time total contributions to the campaign aggregated over $190,000, with all indications pointing to a $225,000 campaign in 1952.  The campaign received a "shot in the arm" by a successful Magic Carpet Day on Sunday, May 18th, led by William Schwartz and Lou Mogy.  It raised $9,5000 from 349 contributors.  Oceanside and Coronado have complet4ed their job, both communities securing more money for the Combined Jewish Appeal than in 1951. New money, $126.40, reported came from students at San Diego State Colllege, led by Hilel Foundation under the chairmanship of Eli Sercarz and Selwyn Berg, with the boys of Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity still to be heard from. Additional contributions have also been received from men in the service through Chaplain Grishman of the Naval Training Center, who has raised $80.00 and Esther Siegel, director of the USO-JWB, who has secured $32.00.

June 13, 1952—"Campaign At 97% of 1951 Total—$200,000 Raised," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 1: With approximately $200,000 in 1952 pledges, the campaign now stands at 87 percent of 1951 pledges of $205,000.  According to Jack Gross, chairman, and his co-chairmen, Louis Moorsteen, Sol Price and Harry Snyder, 1,570 contributions have been received which exceeds the total number of contributions received in 1951.  "However," Gross said, "there are still over 250 uncovered and unreported cards which are holding up the campaign and preventing its completion. If we can get every card covered and every individual who has not as yet made his contribution, we can exceed last year's results by at least 10 percent."  Leading division in the campaign, from the angle of coverage and money, is the Women's Division, under the leadership of Mrs. Jack Gross and her co-chairmen, Mesdames Harry Mallen, Victor Schulman and Robert Strauss. They have done a job which has been recognized nationally and which will be widely publicized in the June issue of the National Women's Division of the UJA "News Record."  Magic Carpet Day, under the leadership of William Schwartz and Lou Mogy, ran the women a close second by raising a final figure of $10,053 from 385 contributors. Gross and his co-chairmen pledged that the campaign would continue until every Jew in San Diego had shouldered his responsibility in the Combine Jewish Appeal for Israel, overseas, national and local needs.  He urged everyone who has not yet made his contribution to do so now by sending it tot he United Jewish Fund, 333 Plaza Street, San Diego 1, California.
