April 10, 1947—"U.J.F. Workers Stepping Up Pace—To Reach Early
Goal," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 1: With the Passover holidays
celebrating the release of Jews from bondage, drawing to a close, the United
Jewish Fund will intensify its campaign to raise $350,000 to provide food,
shelter, medical aid and clothing for the Jews of Europe. Max Rabinowitz
and Louis Steinman, chairmen of the campaign, announced that $000000 {Yes,
that misprint appeared in the paper} had been raised by the Jews of San
Diego which is more money than raised by the entire 1946 campaign. Eli
Levenson, president of the United Jewish Fund, and Nathan Baranov, honorary
chairman of the 1947 campaign, urged an all out effort to arouse the local
community to the widest support of the United Jewish Fund drive for $350,000 of
which approximately $300,000 will go to the United Jewish Appeal consisting of
the Joint Distribution Committee, the United Palestine Appeal and the United
Service for New Americans. The balance will be used for local and national
needs. Workers in the Trades and Industries Division, Women's Division and the
Young People's Division will be out calling on all prospects for their
contribution. The Young People's Division led by Renee Perlmutter and Sallie
Stone are showing the way, having raised $4335.00, $835.00 over their quota.
Trades and Industries have pledges amounting to $121,342.53, while the Women's
Division, with Julia Neumann and Bernice Soule at its head, have total pledges
of $18,587.50. "Coverage," the most important word in the
campaign, will come to life when the 2100 volunteer workers of the United Jewish
Fund go out in full force to reach their prospects. {The following list

around the world, stopped here to give regards from their relatives in New York

the Fourth week-end. Seen at the Mission Valley were the following men tangling

May 1949—"Tifereth Israel Sisterhood," Southwestern Jewish Press,
page 4: "Mother's Day" was the theme of the May meeting of the
Tifereth Israel Sisterhood. Mrs. Abe Ratner, assisted by Mrs. Monroe
Levens, arranged an unusual fashion display. Fashions for grandmother, mother
and daughter made available through the courtesy of the Sanford Dress Shop and
Chenkins Youth Center were previewed. Models were Mesdames Louis Addleson,
Harris Rubel, Betty Solomon, Harry Mallen, Morton Thaler, Misses Andrea Beck,
Sherry Rae Newman, Elene Gordon and Pauline Ratner. Mesdames Sid Smith, Morris
Pomeranz, Lester Cooper, Fred Kaufman, Morris Levenson and Ben Mallen were
gracious hostesses.
June 1949—"Leaders Spur Activities to Complete 1949 Fund
Drive," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 1: Led by the Women's
Division, which concluded its "luncheon" drive last week, the United
Jewish Fund 1949 "Year of Opportunity" Campaign has raised over
$156,000.000 in pledges. Two hundred women were guests of Msdms. Jennie Burnett,
Max Gardner, H.D. Goodrich, Jack Gross, Rodin Horrow, George Neumann, Sam
Perlmutter, Abe Ratner, Victor Schulman, Abe Sklar, Esther Sommers, and
Harry Snyder at a "no minimum" birthday party luncheon which raised
$5,500 to bring the total women's contribution of over $35,000.000 or 87 percent
of the goal they have set for themselves...

daughter, Pauline and Sandy, left June 20, for a trip through Alaska, stopping
at Lake Louise on their way home. The Ratners expect to be gone a month. A
farewell dinner was given them at the El Cortez Hotel before their
departure."

their annual fundraising affair on January 26, 1950. This will be in the form of
a theatre party at the Globe Theatre. The play will be Our Hearts Were Young
and Gay. Mrs. Lawrence Cantor and Mrs. Sam Addleson are co-chairmen for this
event. Mrs. Abe Ratner is program chairman...After the Guardians
New Year's Eve affair, Betty and Its Penter are planning a trek to Las Vegas. Al
and Hilda DeSure as well as Murray and Sara Goodrich are going also. Abe (bump
an apple) Ratner and Ann Ratner are also going to Las Vegas for New
Years....
2) "Tifereth Israel Sisterhood," Southwestern Jewish Press, page
5: A hilarious comedy entitled Women in White will be the attraction on
the calendar of events for the Tifereth Israel Sisterhood Luncheon to be
presented Nov. 10, at 12 o'clock noon at Tifereth Israel Synagogue, 30th and
Howard Streets. The cast will include Sisterhood members: Mesdames Sidney Smith,
Harry Wax, Marco Ratner, Jennie Siner, Abe Smith and Sam Druskin. The play will
be directed by Mrs. Abe Ratner and Mrs. Monroe Levens, program chairman.

ladies; one who is always ready to give credit to some one else, who doesn't
want her name to be mentioned and one who is deserving of the title of community
leader is Mrs. Abe Ratner, known to all as Ann.
December 2, 1949—"Temple Israel Sisterhood," Southwestern
Jewish Press, page 6: The Tifereth Israel Sisterhood extends an
invitation to the congregation and their friends to participate in the Jewish
Home Beautiful Pageant, on December 13th, at 7:30 p.m. at the Tifereth Israel
Synagogue. The Jewish Home Beautiful Pageant is to symbolize the proverb
"The Wisdom of Women Buildeth the Home." Together with the
Father, the Mother creates the sanctuary which has been the Jewish pride through
all the ages, the Jewish Home Beautiful...In charge of the program are Mrs.
Abe Ratner and Mrs. Monroe Levens, co-chairmen, assisted by Mesdames Earl
Brodie, Its Penter, Alex Newman and Harry Mallen. Narrator for this
program is Mrs. A.P. Nasatir, with table hostesses as follows: Rosh Hashanah,
Mrs. Sam Brens; Yom Kippur, Mrs. Rod Horrow; Sukkot, MRs. Woodrow Ratner;
Chanukah, Mrs. Sol Chenkin; Purim, Mrs. Herman Tulchinsky; Passover, Mrs. Milo
Berenson; Shabuous, Mrs. Eddie Cantor, and Shabbat, Mrs. Max Gardner...
December 16, 1949— 1) "'Home Beautiful' Program Impressive," Southwestern
Jewish Press, page 1: Tifereth Israel Synagogue was the scene of a most
impressive program on Tuesday, December 13, the Jewish "Home
Beautiful," a pageant presented by the Sisterhood, in cooperation with the
synagogue and its affiliates, as attended by more than 600 people. Mrs.
A.P. Nasatir was the narrator and the various Jewish holidays were vividly
portrayed with tableaus depicting the role of the woman in the house. The candle
lighting ceremonies added a warm glow to the meaningful, living pictures of each
festive occasion. Mrs. Sidney Newman, president of the Sisterhood,
announced that the proceeds of this affair would be donated to the building of a
Hebrew school, in the names of Mrs. Abe Ratner, chairman of the program
committee, and Mrs. Monroe Levens, wife of Rabbi Levens. More than 85 persons
were involved in the production of this successful undertaking. The
artistry displayed in costumes and decorations drew special commendation.
At the conclusion of the pageant, Rabbi Levens invited the guests to partake of
delicious refreshments, including the traditional latkes. This evening of
inspiration will be long remembered and it is hoped that members of the
community will emulate the beautiful scenes in their own homes —J. Kaufman.

Ratner celebrated with a delightful birthday party for her immediate family on
January 2. How old? Well life hasn't yet begun for Ann.
February 10, 1950—Bobbie Solomon, "Town and Campus," Southwestern
Jewish Press, page 7. Party Time—Starting it all of was the Sweet
Sixteen Birthday Party given by Mr. and Mrs. A. Ratner for their
charming daughter, Pauline. Some twenty-six guests enjoyed a delicious dinner at
dance at the Del Coronado Saturday, Jan. 28. To mention a few of the couples,
there were Dick Silberman n' Berta Rosenfeld (in from C.O.P.), Bobbi Marks n'
Art Bloom (the latter a new and very handsome addition to our fair city from
L.A.), Sandra Schoenkopf n' Larry Gross, Shirley Sarfan n' Stu Penter, and
of course Pauline, wearing a charming strapless dress of green velveteen,
escorted by the always debonair Myron Shelley. It was a lovely party..like the
song says, "it was a real nice clambake and we all had a real nice
time."

Mississippi Room of the Manor Hotel the other evening was (sic,were) Helen
and Vic Schulman, Murray and Sarah Goodrich, and Abe and Ann Ratner.
Uncle Captain and D.J. were discussing with Abe Ratner the styles of slacks they
wanted for their crew on the dream ship "Melody," which is now in the
Harbor of Rio de Janeiro. The discussions were really terrific and provided many
a laugh.

of Mr. and Mrs. Abraham Ratner, was called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah at
Tifereth Israel Synagogue. A reception in the Synagogue followed the
services. Out-of-town guests were Dr. and MRs. S.R. Schwartz of Bakersfield,

American'" Aids Graduate—Next week will complete the course for Welfare
Volunteers selected to be Case Aids in San Diego's Emigre Program. Graduating
from the six week course which had been held under the supervision of Mrs. David
Rubenstein are: Edna Land, June Ferber, June Burnett, Leanore Hutler, Ossie
Erlich, Ruth Colt, Ann Ratner, Gertrude Harris, Henrietta Rubenstien,
Mrs. Harry Goodwin, Mrs. Dan Loewenthal, Lucille Rubel, Essie Ferer, Ruth
DeHovitz, Lee Gray and Mrs. Harry Felson. The Institute has received national
attention from Arthur Greenleigh, Executive Director of the United Service for
New Americans in New York. The course of study covered by the students included
Immigration History of the United States, background of the Displaced Person,
counseling interviews, community resources, and factual material that would be
most helpful in assisting displaced persons to adjust in San Diego. Each
of the graduates will be assigned a family with whom they will work. Much

Jewish Press, page 1: New faces—new ideas—backed by a campaign cabinet
of tried and true campaigners sets the scene for the Women's Division of the
1951 campaign as Rodin Horrow and Morris Douglas, chairmen, announced that Mrs.
M.D. Goodrich, Mrs. Abe Ratner and Mrs Al Neumann had accepted the
responsibility of leading the women of San Diego in this great cause.
Plans are being formulated by these three dynamic women which will keep the
record of the women's division at the high level of previous years. In the 4
years of its existence, women of San Diego have given over $134,000 to the
United Jewish Fund of San Diego. First gathering of women on behalf of the drive
was held yesterday as key workers gathered at the El Cortez to discuss methods
and plans of organization, the chairmen announced. Mrs. Goodrich stated that the
campaign would again be sparked by the Women's Special Gifts Luncheon to be
given by Mrs. Selma Getz on Wednesday, Mar. 28, at the El Cortez. Guest of honor
will be Mrs. S. A. Brailove, chairman National Women's Division, United Jewish
Appeal, who will come to San Diego especially for the affair. Over 400 women
will be invited to luncheons on Wednesday, April 11, which has been designated
as Women's "Blue Feather" Day. They will gather at various homes to
hear the plea of the Fund's 1951 Combined Jewish Appeal. Besides the three
chairmen, the campaign cabinet for the Women's Division will contain Mrs.
Nathaniel Ratner, Mrs. Selma Getz, Mrs. Gabriel Berg, Mrs. Saul Chenkin, Mrs.
Julia Neumann, and Mrs. Louis Steinman, all past chairmen of Fund campaigns.

Moorsteen to head the Special Gifts Division of the 1951 Fund Campaign was

immigration and absorption needs in Israel, relief and rehabilitation in Europe

Jewish Press, page 1: San Diego's 1951 Combined Jewish Appeal of the United
Jewish Fund got off to a fast start in the month of April with scores of workers
out on the streets determined to reach the commitments of $223,920 for Overseas,
Israel, National and local organizations. as over $150,000 was reported at the
"Ken" report meeting, chaired by Abe Abramson last Wednesday, the Fund
drive gained momentum and it is expected that at least $170,000 will be secured
by the end of this week, according to Chairmen (Rodin) Horrow and (Morris)
Douglas. Encouraging reports are coming from every side. The campaign
shows a 30 percent increase in giving. At press time reports from campaigning
headquarters showed the Women's Division still leading the parade of workers
with $32,000 or 95 percent of their goal of $35,000. They expect to top their
goal by the 30th, Mrs. (Sarah) Goodrich, (Anne) Ratner and (Rose) Neuman(n)
stated. Special gifts led by quiet, hard working Lou Moorsteen already has
exceeded last year's amount and has reached 64 percent of its goal of $120,000.
Milt Roberts and Ben Harris report that their large gift workers are moving fast
to take advantage of Bartley Crum's visit which raised over $11,000 in one of
the finest meetings of the campaign. Aiding Milt are Yalee Kahn, Jerry
Freedman and Harry Farb who are working hard on the Liquor Division. The
professional Men are being led by Dave Block, Carl Esenoff, Manny Fisher and Dr.
Oscar Ravin, who are contacting doctors, lawyers and accountants. County
areas and Tiajuana (sic, Tijuana) will be started this week according to teh
chairmen, with a meeting being held in Tiajuana and Ensenada in the very near
future. The campaign has the united support of San Diego Jewry. Histadrut
leadership and workers are doing an outstanding job under the generalship of
Reuben Umansky and Sol Goodman. Zionists and non Zionists are working equally
hard. All three congregations are giving of their men and women in this year of
urgency. "Give today—tomorrow may be too late" is the slogan
being carried by the workers to every organization, every meeting and every
individual. It is a slogan inspired by the needs of the 38 agencies and
institutions at home and abroad served by the United Jewish Fund. Give now and
help end the campaign by May 6th, the chairmen urged. Send your contribution to

3) "Women's Division Nears Goal with 95 Percent in the Bag," Southwestern
Jewish Press, page 1: This is a campaign of urgency—a now or never
drive—and the women are showing the way in top speed in driving to the
conclusion of their section of the 1951 Combined Jewish Appeal. With about
$#20,000 in the bag at the opening of the Blue Feather Luncheons held at the San
Diego Hotel, the homes of Mrs. Rodin Horrow, O.P. Reed and Victor Schulman, the
women secured an additional $12,000 to pull within easy distance of thier goal
of $35,000. The program at the Continental Room of the hotel was televised
through KFMB-TV with Sara Goodrich, Ann Ratner, Rose Neuman, Gladys Block,
Estelle Levi and Bess Snyder in the leading roles. Avraham Doryon, Israeli top
motion picture star, now starring in Dream No More at the Ken Theatre,
was the guest of hoor and made a speech which touched every woman present, and
those that heard him on radio or television. Mrs. Goldie Moss, of Los Angeles,
joined Mr. Doryon in telling the story of the United Jewish Appeal major
beneficiary of the Fund to the over 300 blue feathered women. Planning is going
on in the Women's Division campaign cabinet to finish the drive by May 1st with
an over the top success.
April 27, 1951—"Campaign in Clean-Up Stage—$70,000 Still
Out," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 1: With the organization of
the young People's Division, the opening of the Christian Campaign on the return
of Ewart Goodwin from Israel, and Sunday's "Operation Magic Carpet,"
the Fund drive continued at a rapid pace. Additional contributions this
last week has brought the campaign total to $162,000, better than 65 percent of
the 1951 commitments. Chairmen (Morris) Douglas and (Rodin) Horrow stated that
results so far show a 25 percent increase in giving over last year with more
than $70,000 worth of 1950 givers still to be heard from. Interest ran highest
among the women, preparing for their clean-up, who have raised a total of
$32,000 toward their $35,000 goal. They still have $4,000 worth of 1950 givers
to be seen. (Sarah) Goodrich, (Anne) Ratner and (Rose) Neumann, women's
division chairmen, are busy formulating plans to bring in the balance
swiftly. The Young People's Division has divided itself into two—Young
Adults under the direction of Art Goodman and Joan Steinman—Youth led by Al
Davidson and Sandra Schissell. First major event will be a dinner dance at
Chi-Chi restaurant on Saturday evening, May 5, followed at a later date with a
bang-up barbecue. Working with the chairmen of this division of "fun and
work" are Fran Winicki, Dave Levens, Pauline Ratner, Eileen Gordon, Harvey
Goodfreind, Herb Solomon, Phil Kplan, Dorothy Hess, Sue HJutler, Gary Breitbard,
Shirley Krasner, Burton Sharpe, Bruce Witte, Ben Press, Lee Leherer. Coronado
opened its campaign last week with dynamic William Penn as chairman and Ida
Silverman again leading the women. Aiding Penn are Arthur L. Cohen, Fund Board
member, and last year's chairman. Spurred on by its outstanding citizen, Elmer
Glaser, Oceanside has almost completed its solicitation to show an increase over
1950. Working with Glaser are Sam Finkel and Iz Rocklin.

Jewish Press, page 3: Sara Goodrich, Ann Ratner, and Rose Neumann were
honored by election to the United Society, according to an announcement from the
National Women's Division of the United Jewish Appeal. Torchbearer pins were
presented to them last week by Mrs. Braitlove, National Chairman of the
Division. San Diego's Women made an enviable record as the oversubscribed their
quota of $35,000. Only division in the Campaign to go over 100 percent according
to Rodin Horrow and Morry Douglas, Chairmen of the Campaign.

September 14, 1951—"U.J.F. Allocations Committee Plans
Distribution of Funds," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 5: Sunday,
September 23 is the date set by the Allocations Committee for its open hearing,
according to William Schwartz, Chairman. It is expected that the representatives
of many of the requesting agencies will present their cases before the committee
at the meeting to be held at the El Cortez Hotel. Approximately $150,000 of the
$204,000 raised in the Combine Jewish Appeal for 1951 will be distributed by the
Fund Board of Directors based on the recommendations that will come out of the
Allocations Committee discussions. Chairman Schwartz stated that the committee
had approved the open hearing, as well as the division of the Committee into
subcommittees to study various categories of agencies. Sub-committees appointed
by the chairman are as follows: Cultural-Health and Welfare, Sol Price
(Chairman), Mrs. M.D. Goodrich, Mrs. Gabriel Berg, Dr. R.M. Stone; Service and
Community Relations, Rubin Umansky (Chairman), Morris Douglas, Rodin Horrow,
Mrs. Abe Ratner; Overseas and Israel, Mrs. David Block (Chairman), Morris Kraus,
Eli Levenson and Harry Snyder; Religious Agencies, Mrs. Saul Chenkin (Chairman),
Ray Bass, Louis Moorsteen, and Arthur Gardner. There may be more money to
allocate according to a report from Rodin Horrow and Morris Douglas, campaign
Co-Chairmen, who stated that since the effort to raise an additional $6,000
started on September 1st, $1500 in new and increased pledges have already been
secured. Their hope is to raise $210,000 by the end of the year.

December 7, 1951—"UJF Honors Schulman and Workers At Meeting
Sunday," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 1: The year's activities of
the United Jewish Fund will be reviewed by the membership at the 18th Annual
Dinner meeting on Sunday, December 9th, at the El Cortez. The Don Room
will find San Diego Jewry gathered to honor Victor J. Schulman, President of the
Fund for the past two years. Key workers and "Early Morning Fund
Raisers" in the campaign will receive awards from the United Jewish Appeal
and the United Jewish Fund. Schulman will receive the applause of the Jewish
community for his energetic leadership in communal affairs. A member of the Fund
Board of Directors since 1943, he has served as President, Vice President and
Chairman of many committees. His activity reflected itself in the successful
results of the 1951 Combined Jewish Appeal which raised over $206,000.
Honored along with Schulman will be Ewart Goodwin, Christian Committee Chairman
of the Appeal. Goodwin, one of San Diego's outstanding civic and business
leaders, earlier awarded a Christian-Palestine Fellowship award for travel and
study in Israel and Lebanon, will be presented with an award for his
"sincere interest in humanity." Business of the meeting will
center around the election of 20 members of the Fund to the Board of Directors
for a term of two years. To be presented by the Nominating Committee, Harry Farb,
Chairman, for election to the Board are: Morris Douglas, Jack Gross, David
Horowitz, Rodin Horrow, Ralph Hosenpud, Yale Kahn, Morry Levenson, B.B. Margolis,
Louis Mogy, Dr. A.P. Nasatir, Milton Roberts, Nathan Schiller, Albert Steinbaum,
Dr. Robert M. Stone, Harry Snyder, Ruben Umansky, and Alex Wise. Petitions
have been presented for inclusion on the ballot so that this year, there will be
a contested election for the vacant posts. Among those to be singled out for
special praise are Rodin Horrow and Morrie Douglas, general campaign
co-chairmen; Mrs. M.D. Goodrich, Mrs. Abe Ratner and Mrs. Al Neumann, Women's
Division Co-Chairmen. Also Louis Moorsteen, Milton Roberts, Harry Mallen
and Ben Harris, Chairmen of various divisions. Elections to the "Key
Club," highest honor to be awarded by the Fund, will be announced at the
dinner. Guests will include Harry Rothberg, California Chairman of the
United Jewish Appeal, who will present awards; A.J. Sutherland and Charles
Davies, former recipients of awards, and past presidents Judge Jacob Weinberger,
Nathan F. Baranov and Eli H. Levenson. Levenson, Chairman of the annual
meeting, announced that reservations may be made by calling F-0171. He
called to the attention of the community that only members of the Fund could
vote. A member is defined as one who is a current contributor to the United
Jewish Fund and has paid his previous year's pledge.

minimum luncheon held in the Don Room of the El Cortez Hotel thrilled everyone
as Loretta Gross announced that $8,745 was raised from 76 women present. As
campaign plans for the official opening on April 1st began to unfold, the
Women's Division had $25,840 towards its drive to gather $40,000 as its share of
the $272,146 goal in San Diego. "Change a tent into a home for Israel
women" in this year of the great Homemaking was the plea made by Mrs. Kurt
Laemmle, National United Jewish Appeal leader. Lucky winner of the "Edith
Small" Original Suit was Ann Ratner. A "Michel Original" Suit,
donated by Gladys Scott Smart Shop was also on display. It will be awarded to
the holder of the lucky door prize at the $25 minimum luncheon on April 1st in
the Don Room of the El Cortez Hotel. Hostesses for the Luncheon were Mesdames

November 2005—"Centernial Concert: A TICO Premiere
and a Lot More: Tuesday, November 15th, at 7:30 p.m.," The Shofar (newsletter
of Tifereth Israel Synagogue, San Diego): As part of the celebration in honor of
Tifereth Israel Synagogue's one hundred years, the Tifereth Israel Community
Orchestra will present a concert rich in tradition and Judaica. On Tuesday,
November 15th at 7:30 p.m., in the Synagogue's Cohen Social Hall, TICO will
premiere a new work expressly written for the orchestra. Composer Valarie Morris
has been commissioned to produce a work celebrating Jewish women throughout
history It features four female voices together with the orchestra, but with
additional orchestral colors provided by the use off a shofar, a guitar, an
accordion, and a host of percussion instruments. Titled Voices of Shekhina,
Four Illuminations, the work depicts three historic women, plus the young
Jewish woman of the present and future. Composer Morris did extensive research
into Jewish history, melodic patterns and traditions to assemble a musical work
portraying Shekina, which is the female spirit within Judaism. She interviewed
rabbis, scholars and many young people. The four outstanding voices and their
roles include Anna Bjarnson-Carson (Sarah), Sylvia Lorraine Hartman (Beruriah),
Ava Baker Liss (Gracia) and Julienne McWhirter (the young woman of the future).
They will be in costumes. The printed program will provide ample notes and an
impressive compilation of outstanding Jewish women in history, many whose names
are familiar to us, and many others who may surprise us. Another exciting aspect
of this work is the cooperation with the outstanding and renowned artist Viviana
Lombrozo, who has created in canvas separate portraits of the four women; these
pieces will be displayed at the concert and will be available for sale for the
benefit of the TICO fund. The program has been made possible through a generous
donation by Anne Ratner, a longtime supporter of TICO. This concert will
also present another milestone work. Ten years ago, practically to the day of
the November 15th concert, Israeli Prime Minister and war hero Yitzhak Rabin was
assassinated. The young composer Ariel Blumenthal, originally from Israel and
now writing for film and television in Hollywood, has composed Rabin, a
touching tribute to the fallen leader. The program will open with The Fanfare
for Israel,written by the dean of Israeli composers, Paul Ben-Haim. But
wait! There's more! In the second half of the concert there will be a single
work, but it is the monumental Violin Concert in D Major by Beethoven.
This concerto, one of the masterpieces of all time, will be played by violinist
Ben Domnitz, a student of Juilliard, a chamber music performer, teacher and
conductor. Orginally from Israel, he has performed extensively and has received
critical acclaim for his "fresh approach to the standard
repertory." In a recent review, a critic commented that Dominitz
"seduced both the audience and the orchestra players."

Mystery Solved: Our Earliest Living Member—After our congregation's Centennial
Rededication Service in December, we discovered that our beloved friend, Anne
Ratner, has been a member of Tifereth Israel Synagogue longer than anyone
else! Anne's family moved to San Diego in the 1920's, and was deeply
involved in the early years of our congregation and its subsequent history. Anne
and her beloved husband, Abraham of blessed memory, are long time supporters and
champions of Tifereth Israel. Two small examples: our Torah School is named
after Abraham Ratner and Anne founded our Sisterhood in her living room. Anne's
kindness and generosity continue today. In addition to her generous support of
Tifereth Israel and the Jewish community, she is also the sponsor of our
"Abraham and Anne Ratner Scholar-in Residence Weekend." She also
recently sponsored TICO's Centennial Concert, and just made an extremely
generation to help us replace our Cohen Social Hall air conditioner. All of
that...and our longest membership as well. You will be able to read
further details of Anne and her family's history, as well as those of our other
founding families, in the Tifereth Israel Centennial Book that is being
assembled by Laurie Gore and will be published in March. We have found a
"sixth generation" member of our congregation, Leah Fish, is the
great-great-great granddaughter of Elias Jacobson, one of our founders. Also
present at our rededication service, but not properly acknowledged, were other
members of the Jacobson family. Elias's granddaughter, Audrey Kapelus and her
husband Marvin, his great-granddaughter, Kathi Fish and her husband, Larry; his
great-great-grandson, Cory fish, and his wife, Pamela. Cory and Pamela are
currently members of Tifereth Israel and their daughter Leah attends our
Silverman Preschool!
