June 19, 1947—"Hadassah," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 6: The San Diego Chapter of Hadassah concluded its season's activities with the holding of the annual Donor's Luncheon at the El Cortez Hotel on Wednesday, June 11th.  The out-going president Mrs. Louis Steinman greeted the assembled gathering of more than 200. Mrs. Steinman, who has served the local chapter as president for more than two years, was presented with a framed certificate in token of her years of service. The certificate stated that her name was inscribed in the Golden Book of the Jewish National Fund. A precedent was established by holding installation ceremonies at the Donor's Luncheon, instead of at the first meeting in September. The reason given for the change as explained by Mrs. Abe Nasatir, who conducted the proceedings was that the summer months would offer opportunity for new officers to get acquainted and to plan for the coming year. Mrs. Gabriel Berg was seated as president, succeeding Mrs. Steinman. Other officers installed were Mmes. Louis Bickman, Nate Ratner, Manuel Haffner, Vice Presidents, Fred Kaufman, Recording Se'y, Alvin May, Corresponding Sec'y, Al Slayen, Treasurer, Robert Burkhart, Financial Sec'y and Bea Cochran, Auditor.  Mrs. Louis Bickman, chairman of the Hadassah Medical Organization, reported on funds raised during the year. The one fund raising event, "Premier Night" held last March at the State Theatre, was highly successful for it aided the local chapter to exceed its quota by $2000. Net proceeds for the event was $3500.  The audience was delighted with the entertainment provided by Leon Belasco and Jacque Press and Mrs. Irwin Riss, Southern Coast Regional Vice President of Hadassah, gave a stirring political address. The invocation and benediction was given by Rabbi Moise Bergman.

They pointed out that the irreducible minimum goal of the United Jewish Appeal for 1949 is $250,000,000. April 28, 1950—1) "$100,000 Mark for United Jewish Fund Reached in April," Southwestern Jewish Press, pages 1, 14: In the first two weeks of the campaign to "Keep the Miracle Alive," one third of the $283,000 has been secured, reported Murray D. Goodrich and Nathaniel Ratner, General Campaign Co-Chairman.  Over $95,000 had been raised by April 24th, two weeks from the start of the campaign, from less than 400 subscribers, according to the report which was given at a workers meeting held last week. The chairmen were convinced that they would reach the first step of their goal, which was to have over $100,000 by April 30th. "On all fronts the campaign is moving forward in a very satisfactory and enthusiastic fashion," Goodrich and Ratner said. They pointed to the outstanding work of Elmer Glaser of Oceanside, who at the last meeting reported over a 100 percent increase with $1800 collected to date, as compared to $890 in the entire 1949 campaign.  Arthur L. Cohen, Chairman of the Coronado Campaign, showed not only increased contributions, but much wider coverage. William Schwartz and Jerome Freedman, Chairmen of the el Cajon, La Mesa and Grossmont District, reported an almost completed job, showing no cuts and several increases .In the Women's Division report, presented by Selma Getz, $12,500 had been secured from 30 women at an advanced gift luncheon held last week, and addressed by Ida Nasatir. As we go to press, we do not have the results of the large Women's Division Luncheon held yesterday at the El Cortez Hotel, but every indication points to the fact that it will exceed last years Women's Division effort.  Religious School Children of Temple Beth Israel and Tifereth Israel sparked the opening of the Young People's Division of the United Jewish Fund last week. The boys and girls of Beth Israel presented a check for $242.56 to Mrs. Arthur Goodman, Co-chairman of the Young People's Division and Herbert Solomon, in which all religious school collections were contributed to "Keep the Miracle Alive."  Tifereth Irael Youngsters pledged $150 of their Ts'dakah funds for the 1950 drive, both contributions exceeded thier 1949 gifts.  According to Mrs. Goodman, Dave Anfanger and Dick Silberman, Co-chairmen of the Young People's Division of the campaign, as far as the Youths of San Diego are concerned, the drive has just begun to roll. Mrs. Goodman reported a most successful luncheon for young women held last Saturday. On the same evening, the opening gun of the Young People's Division was fired with a dinner dance attended by over 100, and addressed by Ernst Michel, young emigre, who told of the needs of the United Jewish Appeal.  As a pre-campaign meeting for the Young People's Division, a Sports Night was held under the leadership of Dave Anfanger, for Junior High School boys, some 50 youngster made their contribution at that meeting. Scout Troops 99 and 15 participated.  Norman Holtzman, Al Davidson, Mitzi Schiller, Herb Solomon, Ben Press, Joan Steinman, Sid Stokes, Sylvia Winicki, Fran Winicki, Howard Esterson, Joe Yaffee and LeeWinicki are active leaders in the Young People's Division, which on the opening day raised almost $2,000. The Christian Committee under the leadership of Charles Davies, chairman; Bishop Buddy and Dr. Thomas Coyle, co-chairmen, reported that they had secured $5,461 from Christian gifts in San Diego and that they are anticipating many additional gifts.  Goodrich and Ratner urge every man, woman and child in San Diego to become a giver.  Work on the Magic Carpet but if you cannot be a modern magician stay at home and make your contribution to the miracle worker who calls on you on Sunday April 30th.
2) "More Top Gifts," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 1: The following are additional gifts to the 1950 "Keep the Miracle Alive Campaign": ...Mrs. A.P. Nasatir, $200.

3) "Magic Carpet Day, Sunday, April 30th: Be A Worker or Stay at Home Until A Worker Calls on You," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 16:  Over 150 "Modern Miracle Workers" are expected to participate in San Diego's "Operation Magic Carpet" this Sunday, April 30th, MOrris Douglas, chairman of the day, stated. Gathering for instructions at Beth Israel Center, the workers will breakfast (courtesy of the Jolly Sixteen) at 9:30 a.m., receive their lists and be off to knock on doors on behalf of the "Keep the Miracle Alive" Campaign of the United Jewish Fund.  "Magic Carpet Day," said Douglas, "is an effort to dramatically call to the attention of the Jews of San Diego, the needs of the Jews of Europe, Africa and the Moslem countries, as well as Israel, and to have the greatest possible coverage in the history of any campaign. We hope that our Miracle Workers will cover over 1200 prospects on this one day."  All organizations have helped in the recruitment of workers. To date, the following workers have signed their pledge to be the crew of the "Magic Carpet":  .... Mrs. Ida Nasatir....

May 12, 1950—1) "Halfway Mark Reached in 1950 Fund Drive," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 1: ...Two outstanding speakers gave the Women's Division another successful meeting, when Ida Nasatir and Esther Moorsteen told the story of the need of the 1950 "Keep the Miracle Alive" Campaign to over 169 women, who had gathered at the El Cortez Hotel....

2) "Hadassah 'Mother-Daughter Luncheon Great Success," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 7: An affair which was, without a doubt, unprecedented for human interest and touching gratitude was the "Mother-Daughter" luncheon meeting of Hadassah on Wednesday, May 10th, at the Temple Center, honoring Mrs. Ida Nasatir, a much-loved and worthy recipient. Depicting her life in a musical skit, the audience was delighted with the ingenuity of the home-talent acting and singing. And not least of those enjoying the afternoon was Ida herself, who could be seen smiling throughout, we hope with approval. As further evidence of the love and respect the organization holds for her (as if she needed more proof) Ida was presented with a beautiful gift.  Comprising the cast were Mmes victor Selten, David Block, Max Gardner, Irvin Kahn, Joseph Kwint, Julius Levin, David Miller, Max Rabinowitz, William Schwartz, Joseph Silverman, Al Slayan (sic, Slayen), Maxwell Kaufman and Sigmund Stein. The skit was written by Gertrude Thaler and Thelma Selten. Much enthusiasm bespoke the acceptance of the musical quartette, composed of Mmes. Leo Beck, Lawrence Cantor, Edward Kitaen and Harry Mallen, as well as the skit...—Sivia Bickman, Publicity

May 26, 1950—1) "Beth Jacob Forms New Sisterhood," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 4: With the advent of a new building which will house the Synagogue and center for Beth Jacob, a new group within the structure of Beth Jacob is being organized.  A group of some fourteen ladies met at the home of Mrs. Morrie S. Kraus recently to outline plans for the formation of a Sisterhood. A temporary committee was chosen to outline plans for an affair to acquaint the community with this new organization. Mrs. Morton Thaler, temporary chairman, assisted by Mesdames Julius Penn; Robert Strauss; Robert Penn; Morris S. Kraus; Yale Kahn; William Penn; Ben Ornstein; A.A. Abramson; Arthur Gordon; Jack Prager; Aubrey Shulkind; Sidney O. Weiss; Alwin J. June 9, 1950—"Home for the Aged," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 8: At the Fifth Annual May Donor Luncheon of the Women's Auxiliary the following officers were installed by Ida Nasatir: Mrs. Wm. Moss, Pres; Mrs. Morris Feldman, 1st Vice Pres; Mrs. Sarah Shelley, 2nd Vice Pres.; Mrs. Max Rabinowitz, Treas.; Mrs. Moe Hershey, Recording Sec'y; Mrs. Abe Forster; Corresponding Sec'y; Mrs. Paul Cudney, Auditor; Mrs. Zel Greenberg, Parliamentarian. The motif of the installation was a large wishing well, into which the members dropped coins, as wishes were made by the narrator, Ida Nasatir. Elected to the Board for 1950-1951 were the following members: Mesdames Milo Berenson, Edward Binder, Morris Breitbard, Arthur Glickman, Jose. Goldhammer, Ben Levenson, Paul Nestor, Geo. Neuman, Harry Rosenthal, Nathan Rubin, Abe Sackheim, Abe Sklar, Sam Sklar, Jeennie Siner, Henry Witte.  Mrs. Al Neumann is an honorary life member and Mrs. Saul Chenkin is an honorary director. The three religious leaders in our community participated in the ceremonies. Rabbi Morton J. Cohn gave the Invocation, Rabbi Monroe Levens spoke on "Reflections of the Home and Its Bearing on the Community," and Rabbi Baruch Stern gave the Benediction...

October 20, 1950—"Sins of the Parents," Southwestern Jewish Press (editorial), page 2:  The following clipping was sent to us by Ida Nasatir from Paris: A fifteen year old Jewish girl in Paris was converted to Catholicism while away on her vacation without the knowledge of her parents. When asked later what moved her to change her religion, the French girl replied that she was not aware of having made a change at all. For her parents were not religious; they did not believe in God, nor did they attend church or observe religious ceremonies. She therefore concluded that Jews were a people without religion. On the other hand, her Catholic girl friends took her to Church where she liked the services and the music so much that she decided to become a Catholic. She saw nothing wrong or unusual in the move although the incident shocked the Jewish community of Paris.  It seems to us that the above is "food for thought." It could conceivably happen in our community. How many parents send their children to Sunday School at one of the Synagogues? How many parents take advantage of the fact that Hebrew Schools have classes daily, free of charge, for those who cannot pay. The Synagogues have opened their doors to all children regardless of whether they are affiliated or not. The Rabbis realize the importance of teaching Jewish children why they are Jews...so that the story of the French girl will not be repeated here... Think about it...the 'Sins of the Parents."

May 11, 1951—"Mitzi Schiller Wed in Candlelight Ceremony," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 3:  On Sunday, May 6th, in Temple Beth Israel, Mitzi Roslyn Schiller became the wife of Harry Babbitz. Mitzi is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Schiller of this city and Harley is the son of Mrs. Henry Babbitz and the late Mr. Babbitz of Sioux City, Iowa.  Rabbi Morton J. Cohn officiated in a candlelight ceremony.  Mitzi, looking as fresh and pretty as the Spring flowers decorating the Temple, was led to the altar by her father. She wore a gown of candlelight satin, with an illusion net yoke, an off the shoulder collar and a full skirt falling into a cathedral train.  Her coronet was of seed pearls and rose point lace, with a shoulder length, illusion veil.  The bride wore a necklace and earrings of seed pearls (a present of the bridegroom). She carried a white prayer book, with a white orchid and stephanotis, and a beautiful lace handkerchief sent from Paris by Dr. and Mrs. Abe Nasatir...

September 28, 1951—1) "Welcome Home, Ida and Abe Nasatir," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 1: Back after a year in Europe are our own Ida and Abe Nasatir. Abe arrived some weeks ago to get set for the new term at State College. Ida had been in San Francisco, visiting with relatives. Both look well and happy.  Ida and Abe visited Israel during the Passover Holidays and feel that the new state will become a force for Democracy in the Near East.  Ida will shortly make her appearance at various local functions to tell of her impressions and experiences during her stay in Europe.

2) "Flash!" Southwestern Jewish Press, page 1: Abe and Ida Nasatir, who have just returned from a year stay in Europe, will make their initial appearance before the Jewish community on Wednesday, October 24th at 8:00 p.m. at Temple Beth Israel. Ida will highlight their experiences in Europe and Israel. The rally will be under the sponsorship of the President's Council and all Jewish organizations.

October 12, 1951—1) "Entire Community To Hear Ida Nasatir Report," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 1: San Diego Jewry will have its first opportunity in over a year to hear Ida Nasatir on Wednesday, October 24, 8:00 p.m. at Beth Israel Temple. A reception and meeting sponsored by all of the Jewish organizations of San Diego through the Presidents' Council will "welcome home" Dr and Mrs. A.P. Nasatir after an absence of 15 months spent in Western Europe and in Israel. One month spent in the cities, kibbutzim, and desert of Israel; her visits to various institutions supported by American money through Hadassah, the Pioneer Women and Mizrachi Women; her ability to mix with the "little men and women" of Israel gave her a background of material which comes to very few.  An ability to dramatically picture her observations, the things she and Dr. Nasatir have seen and done; and to frame them in beautiful language easily understood by all, has made Ida Nasatir one of the outstanding women speakers on the Pacific Coast. Her unbiased, unprejudiced dramatic report of Israel today should be the major event of the year.  Immediately following the meeting a reception will be tendered Dr. and Mrs. Nasatir in the Temple Center with refreshments being served by the women of the Jwish organizations. Chairmen for the reception are: Ann Schloss, President of Bay City Chapter, B'nai B'rith, and Mrs. Ethel Berwin, President of Birdie Stodel Chapter, B'nai B'rith.  The program for the meeting is under the direction of Mrs. Frances Moss, president of the Hebrew Home Auxiliary, and Mrs. Pearl Slayen, president of Hadassah. Mrs. Gabriel Berg, president of the Presidents' Council, is chairman of the evening. Those who know te Nasatirs will want to meet them and hear them again.  Newcomers to our community who have not met the Nasatirs will be in for a treat on October 34, at 8:00 p.m. at Temple Beth Israel.

2) "Committee Formed to Honor Dr. Sachar," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 7: Dr. A.P. Nasatir, chairman of the Brandeis University Committee, today announced that a dinner would be held on Tuesday, October 30 at the El Cortez Hotel for which Dr. A.L. Sachar, President of the University, would be present as the guest of honor. Arrangements for the dinner are being handled by Morris Kraus. Serving with Dr. and Mrs. Nasatir and Mr. and Mrs. Kraus as a Brandies University Committee are: Rabbis and Mesdames Morton J. Cohn, Monroe Levens and Baruch Stern.  also Doctors and Mesdames J.A. Kwint, Robert Stone, and Ernest Wolf, and Messrs. and Mesdames Samuel Addleson, Abraham Abramson, Elias Berwin, Edward Breitbard, Morris Douglas, Harry E. Farb, Jerome Freedman, Murray Goodrich, Rodin S. Horrow, Albert Hutler, Maxwell Kaufman, Edward Kitaen, Eli Levenson, Harry Mallen, Lou Mogy, Maury Novak, Sol Price, Milton Roberts, David Schloss, Victor Schulman, Wm. B. Schwartz, Isadore Teacher and Henry Weinberger.  This is the first occasion on which Dr. Sachar will speak to the San Diego community on Brandeis University.

October 26, 2005—1) "Ida Nasatir Tells of Hadassah Work," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 5: There's a Guest in our House and it's Ida Nasatir and Hadassah invites anyone and everyone to join in a Welcome Home greeting to San Diego's outstanding Jewish woman. The date is next Friday, Nov. 2nd at noon. A delightful and delectable luncheon will be served under the co-supervision of Mmes Harris Rubel, Al Neuman, Sophie Berman and R.W. Smith. What more could you ask for? ...Ida will present a factual accounting of her recent experiences in the newly-formed State and all guests are assured of a stirring report. There are many surprises in store for those attending and a gala climax to the program isw just one of them. Be on hand to say "Hello" and "Welcome Home" to Ida Nasatir next Friday at noon at the Temple Center.

2) "Nasatir's Plea 'Pay Your Pledge'", Southwestern Jewish Press, page 6: "Jews throughout the world look to us in America for help in thier battle for surival and a new life," Dr. and Mrs. Nasatir told a large and enthusiastic group of friends welcoming them back to San Diego last Wednesday evening. Ida Nasatir told her friends gathered at Temple Beth Israel that the 15 months spent in France and in Israel had a tremendous effect on their thinking. Speaking of Jewish life in Paris among the refugees, she told of the work of such organizations as the Joint Distribution Committee and of ORT, both supported by the United Jewish Appeal. Israel as she and Dr. Nasatir saw it was powerfully described when she compared it with the squalor and the miserable existence of refugees in the Paris that she so well knew. "Though we will never understand how the Jews of Israel were able to do what they have done," Mrs. Nasatir expressed a great hope that with our aid to the UJA, Bonds for Israel, and private investment, people of Israel will be able to do even more. The Nasatirs concluded by asking everyone who had not as yet paid their pledge to do so immediately because the most important thing in Israel today was the American dollars. The meeting and reception which followed was under the sponsorship of the Presidents' Council and its organizations. Mrs. Gabriel Berg, President of the Council, chaired the meeting and was assisted in its arrangements by Mrs. Ethel Berwin, President of Birdie Stodel B'nai B'rith Lodge; Mrs. Ann Schloss, President Bay City B'nai B'rith Lodge; Mrs. Frances Moss, President Hebrew Home Auxiliary and Mrs. Pearl Slayen, leader of Hadassah.

November 9, 2005— 1) Albert Hutler, "Community Currents," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 2: ... Presents $5,000 CheckRodin Horrow, visiting in New York, presented an additional check for $5,000 from San Diego Jewry to the officers of the United Jewish Appeal last weekend at the extraordinary conference at the Hotel Commodore New York called for the purpose of securing $38,000,000 in cash before the end of the year. Acceleration of cash collection on the 1951 Campaign through the Ida Nasatir meeting made it possible to forward the additional cash bringing San Diego's total to the United Jewish Appeal for 1951 to $107,000. Cash collection at the weekend meeting amounted to $19,000,000 in a thrilling presentation of checks from Welfare Funds throughout the country, according to Horrow.  "Because cash is urgently needed to continue work of the Joint Distribution Committee, the relief and rehabilitation of Jews of Europe, and the immigration of Jews to Israel, the United Palestine Appeal, its assistance to Jews in Israel and in the Camps, and the United Service for New Americans working with newly arrived immigrants within the United States, San Diego's Jewish Fund is going all out on a collection drive during a "Cash Collection Week" in early December, according to Ben Harris, collection Chairman for the Fund.  "Pledges," he said, "are not enough to meet our commitments to overseas, Israel, national and our local Federation Agencies. These pledges must be converted into cash now so that the work of these very vital agencies may continue." Harris urged everyone to pay their pledge now by mailing their check to the United Jewish Fund, 333 Plaza.

2) "Group Forms for 'Pkgs. for Israel," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 8—Morris Marantz, local merchant, is spearheading a drive to send packages of food and clothing to Israel through CARE.  For the past few months Mr. and Mrs. Marantz have been corresponding with families in Israel who are recommended by the Social Welfare Department. With the coming of the rainy season and bad weather the group is sending clothing for children and adults and asks the community to contact Mrs. Abe Nasatir or to bring clothing and food to the Beth Jacob Synagogue...

The Lipinsky Institute for Judaic Studies Newsletter, page 3: For over 60 years, Ida Nasatir graced the San Diego Jewish community with her presence. The thousands of people who met her, read her columns in the San Diego Jewish Press Heritage, or heard her reviews of Jewish books at the 54th Street Jewish Community Center fondly recall how Ida mesmerized an audience, embodied the Jewish love of learning, and exuded loving kindness in her relationships with others. To celebrate her lifelong contributions to san Diego Jewry and to mark her recent passing at the age of 94, the Lipinsky Institute will rename the annual Abraham Nasatir Lecture in American Jewish History the "Ida & Abraham Nasatir Lecture in American Jewish History." The first lecture under the new name is aptly entitled, "A History of Their Own: Jewish Women in America" by Professor Hasia Diner of New York University. It is scheduled for the evening of March 21st on the San Diego State University campus and will be co-sponsored by the Women's Studies Department at SDSU.
