San Diego's Jewish leadership has been highly complimented in the past few weeks by very short visits from such leading American Jews as Henry Montor, Executive Vice President of the Bonds for Israel; Abraham Dickenstein, President of the American Palestine Trading Corporation (AmPal), and a future visit of Victor Carter, President of the City of Hope. All of these men came to san Diego to discuss their organizations with community leaders in order to secure their support and cooperation. This is one indication that San Diego is coming of age.

A check in the sum of some $3,400 was presented to the San Diego Hebrew Home for the Aged at its annual meeting last Sunday by Carl Esenoff, president of the Federation. The check was to cover deficit in operating costs for 1951. You might be interested to know that there are now 15 residents living in the Home; that their average monthly payment to the Home is $90; and that it takes $127 per resident to operate the Home. The Home will soon be going out on an expansion program in order to house 30 to 45 guests, and will be helped by the San Diego Federation of Jewish Agencies in which it holds membership as well as the United Jewish Fund.

After over 30 years in existence as the Jewish Welfare Society, the board of directors, at its last meeting, voted to change the name to the Jewish Social Service Agency of San Diego. This is in keeping with the expanded program of the agency since it functions in many fields of social service dealing with its many problems All of the board members felt a great deal of sentiment for the old name but agreed that the new name expresses much better the function of the agency. The Community Chjest recently gave the agency a $1,300 supplement in its 1952 budget raising the total amount received from the Community Chest to $6,419. The agency is jointly financed by the Red Feather Community Chest and the Jewish Federation..

Community Relations Council is continuing its work with the schools and in cooperation with the Anti-Defamation League has presented a large number of Rabbi Phillip Bernstein's "What The Jews Believe" to the schools. Its members have sat on the City School's moral and spiritual Education committee which is just about ready to release its report. These 3 (sic, 2) agencies are part of the San Diego Federation of Jewish agencies and are financed through monies received by the Federation from the United Jewish Fund out of the Combined Jewish Appeal.

The McCarran Act in the Senate and the Walters Bill in the House, two vicious discriminatory and unsatisfactory immigration bills have been passed. The House and Senate Committee will meet in order to effectuate a general agreement on the final bill to be passed. It is the hope of everyone who is sincerely interested in seeing that people have the opportunity to immigrate to the United States that President Truman will have the courage to veto this bill.
