Jacobson, Mr. and Mrs. Irving Goodman and Mr. and Mrs Alex J. Newman were among
the guests in Los Angeles at the Founders' Day Dinner of the University of
Judaism on Sunday night, December 4th, which honored the great educator, Dr.
Mordecai Kaplan.

October 6, 1950—"Tifereth
Israel Center and School Building Assured," Southwestern Jewish Press, page
7: The members and friends of Tifereth Israel and the entire San Diego
Jewish Community may well rejoice and take pride in the achievements that were
realized during the past High Holy Days. Invited to participate in a
time-payment plan so that funds would be assured for the new buildings, so
vitally necessary for the program of activities at Tifereth Israel, and to
better serve the entire community—the audience most generously responded by
pledging the sum of $65,000.00. According to Mr. Alex Newman,
Synagogue President, and Mr. Arthur Gardner, Chairman of the Building Finance
Committee, in consultation with the members of the Building Committee,
consisting of Mr. I. Teacher, Chairman, and Mr. Its. Penter and Mr. Irving
Goodman, Co-Chairmen —the sum pledged will make it possible to proceed to
break ground on December 3rd. The new building will include a large
auditorium, with seating capacity of 750, with complete stage facilities for the
most elaborate productions. It will also be equipped for athletic faciltieis,
such as basketball, badminton, volley ball, etc., with men's and women's
dressing rooms. In addition to the large auditorium, there will be two
smaller auditoriums, with seating capacity of about 250, one of which will be
convertable into two club or class rooms. Nine rooms will be built suitable for
club or class room activities. A beautiful lounge is planned, with glass doors
giving a sweeping effect into a large patio in the center of the building. The
new structure will contain, in addition to the above, a Rabbi's study,
secretary's office, book and gift shop, two check rooms, a large modernly
designed kitchen, and a spacious lobby. A choir loft will also be added to the
present Synagogue building.
November 17, 1950—"University of Judaism Founders Day
Dinner Nov. 19," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 1: The Annual
Founders Day Dinner, in honor of the establishment of the University of Judaism
in Los Angeles, will be held at the Biltmore Hotel, Sunday evening, November
19th. Dr. Louis Finkelstein, President of the Jewish Theological Seminary of
America, which sponsors the University of Judaism will be the speaker. Mr.
Ezio Pinza, famous Metropolitan Opera singer, will be the guest artist. An
original Eternal Light broadcaset will also be presented. Attending the
Founder's Day Dinner from San Diego, will be Rabbi and Mrs. Monroe Levens,
Cantor Joseph Cysner, Mr. and Mrs. M.S. Berlin, Mr. and Mrs. Max Zemen, Mr. I
Jacobson, Mr. Its Penter, Mr. and Mrs. Sid Newman, and M. and Mrs. Irving
Goodman.
December 1, 1950—"Tifereth Israel Breaks Ground
for New Religious School Building," Southwestern Jewish Press, page
1: The ceremonies of groundbreaking for the new Religious School Building of
Tifereth Israel Synagogue will take place Sunday, December 3rd, at 2:30 p.m. at
Tifereth Israel. The entire community is most cordially invited to attend the
ceremonies. Invitations have been extended to San Diego community leaders in all
walks of life to be present at the ceremonies. The invocation will be given by
Rabbi Baruch Stern. Cantor Joseph Cysner will direct the Junior Choir in several
musical presentations. Greetings will be extended by a number of dignitaries.
Rabbi Morton J. Cohn will give the Benediction and Rabbi Monroe Levens will
deliver the address. The Ground-Breaking Ceremonies are under the direction of
Mr. Isadore Teacher, Chairman of the Building Committee; Mr. Arthur Gardner,
Chairman of the Building Finance Committee; Its Penter, Irving Goodman, the
officers of the congregation, including Alex J. Newman, President; M.S. Berlin,
Vice Pres.; Henry Bowman, Recording Secretary; Edward Baranov, Financial
Secretary; Moe J. Hershey, Treasurer. The new building, designed in the offices
of Milo Berenson, building consultant, contain nine classrooms, as well as
facilities for a pre-school and kindergarten, a main auditorium that can be used
for assemblies, meetings, dinners, dances, and dramatic presentations, etc.,
kitchen, library, lounge and offices. Various bronze plaques to be affixed to
the new building will honor the names of those who have made contributions in
certain amounts. The names of the contributors will be inscribed in the Golden
Book of Honor, as a permanent remembrance. In addition, some rooms have been
subscribed for, and will bear the names of the donors. At present such rooms
have been contributed by the families of Alex J. and Sidney Newman, Ralph
Hosenpud, Max and Arthur Gardner, in memory of Charlotte Gardner, the Daughters
of Israel and the Tifereth Israel Sisterhood, which has subscribed for one of
the assembly halls. A reception will follow the Ground-Breaking Ceremonies
tendered by the Daughters of Israel and the Sisterhood.

May 25, 1951—"United Synagogue Holds
Conference," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 6: The full program for
the Sixth Annual Conference of the United Synagogue of America and the National
Women's League, Southern California Region, was being formulated this week
following individual and joint planning sessions of the two organizations
representing 25 Conservative congregations in Southern California, Arizona and
Nevada. More than 500 delegates are expected to attend the conference Sunday,
May 27th, at Sinai Congregation, Fourth and New Hampshire in Los Angeles, where
an afternoon of seminars and business meetings will precede the evening dinner
featuring Dr. Max Routtenberg, executive vice president of the Rabbinical
Assembly of America as guest speaker. ...The following will attend as delegates
from Tifereth Israel Synagogue of San Diego: M.S. Berlin, Its Penter, Arthur
Gardner, Ben Levenson, Joe J. Kader, Bob Cheron, Moss Addleson, I. Jacobson,
Irving Goodman and Max Zemen. Alternates: Simon Rich, Harold Steckel,
Henry Bowman, Herman Tulchinsky, Sam Brenes, Sam Sklar, Joe Spatz, Sid Newman,
Paul Nestor and Marco Ratner.
July 6, 1951—"Israel Bond Drive Passes $50,000 Mark in San
Diego," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 1: At a luncheon held at the
San Diego Club last week, additional commitments were reached for Israel Bonds to
bring the San Diego Committee's total over the $50,000 mark, Chairman Louis
Steinman announced today....Recent appointments to the Executive Committee of
Bonds of the Israel Government include Alex J. Newman, President, Tifereth
Israel Congregation, and Nathan Schiller, President, Beth Israel Temple.
Newly appointed Bond Chairmen for organizations include M.S. Berlin and Irving
A. Goodman for Tifereth Israel Men's Club; Mrs. Hyman Wishnek for San Diego Bay
City B'nai B'rith Women and Mrs. Gertrude Harris for Beth Israel
Sisterhood.

April 27, 1989 -- "Irving
Goodman Honored," San Diego Jewish Times, p. 50: Tifereth
Israel Synagogue will host its annual University of Judaism Scholar-in-Residence
weekend beginning Friday evening, April 28, and continuing through Sunday
morning, April 30. University patron and Tifreth Israel benefactor Irving
Goodman will be honored with a special award from the university. Rabbi David
Wolpe has been chosen to represent the university and to address the
congregation during Friday evening services on April 28, at 8 p.m. at Shabbat
morning services on April 29, at 9:30 a.m., and at a Sunday brunch at 10
a.m. Goodman's affiliation with Tifereth Israel goes back to 1948 when he
first arrived in California. That was the year that Tifereth Israel, under
the guidance of Rabbi Monroe Levens, became San Diego's first (sic) Conservative
synagogue. {DHH insert note --Beth Jacob previously was Conservative, and
essentially switched movements with Tifereth Israel}. A staunch supporter from
early on, Goodman has held the office of congregational president three times.
He was also the co-chairperson for the construction of the synagogue's school
and social hall wing on Howard Street, and was the Building Fund chairperson for
the current facility. He served on the Board of Overseers of the University of
Judaism and has been a university patron for many years. Goodman has also been
the fundraising chairperson for two Masonic lodges in their endeavors to support
the home for the aged and the orphanage sponsored by the Masonic Grand Lodge of
California. Mr. Goodman is married to Sarah Goodman, who is a patron of
the University of Judaism in her own right; he is the father of Dr. Allan
Goodman and Nancy Weiner. Rabbi Aaron gold notes, "Tifereth Israel
Synagogue and the University of Judaism are fortunate to have this wonderful
human being and philanthropist as their 1989 honoree. He is an outstanding asset
to the synagogue, the University of Judaism and the Jewish
community." The public is invited to be present throughout the entire
University of Judaism Scholar-in-Residence Weekend, and to attend the Sunday

The Irving & Sara Goodman Chapel is off
the administrative wing of Tifereth Israel Synagogue at 6660 Cowles Mountain
Blvd, and just across a walkway from
the Conservative congregation's main sanctuary. Shacharit services are
held in the chapel every weekday and Sunday morning, providing an opportunity
for
mourners to say kaddish.
