Writings about Pauline (Ratner) Foster

-1949-

May 1949
—"Tifereth Israel Sisterhood," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 4: "Mother's Day" was the theme of the May meeting of the Tifereth Israel Sisterhood. Mrs. Abe Ratner, assisted by Mrs. Monroe Levens, arranged an unusual fashion display. Fashions for grandmother, mother and daughter made available through the courtesy of the Sanford Dress Shop and Chenkins Youth Center were previewed. Models were Mesdames Louis Addelson, Harris Rubel, Betty Solomon, Harry Mallen, Morton Thaler, Misses Andrea Beck, Sherry Rae Newman, Elene Gordin and Pauline Ratner. Mesdames Sid Smith, Morris Pomeranz, Lester Cooper, Fred Kaufman, Morris Levenson and Ben Mallen were gracious hostesses.

July 1949—1) Pearl Lieberman, "The Way We Heard It," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 4: The Abe Ratners, accompanied by their son and daughter, Pauline and Sandy, left June 20, for a trip through Alaska, stopping at Lake Louise on their way home. The Ratners expect to be gone a month. A farewell dinner was given them at the El Cortez Hotel before their departure."

2) Linda Solof, "Linda's Lookout," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 9: Beaches, hayrides, swimming pools and far away paces, all these spell summer vacation. Esther Schwartz is on her way to Yellowstone National Park and Pauline and Sandy Ratner are on their way to that far away place, Alaska.... Another sandy affair was the T.Y.L. beach party.  Having a fine time were Elene Gordon, Shirley Weiss, Carol Kaufman, Esther Weinstock, Pauline Ratner, Howard Esterson, Oscar Saul, Don Goldmai, Herb Solomon, Bob Wollard, Ira Shames and Bernie Asner...

3) Bobbie Solomon, "Collegiates N' Intermejits," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 9:...Maybe Imig Manor will never allow another Sweet Sixteen to be held at their Mississippi Room, but charming Sandra Schoenkopf won't care. Her sixteenth birthday party Saturday eve, June 18, was a party to end all parties. This fine and gay affair presented a delicious dinner, dancing and entertainment and fun for all. Sandra looked lovely in a fluffy white organdy off-the-shoulder dress which seemed to intrigue her handsome escort, Larry gross. Just a few of the some thirty guests helping Sandra celebrate were Arlene Solof n' Herb Solomon, Joan Steinman n' Bill Fox, Annabelle Rassin n' Ted Mintz, Elene Gordon n' Herb Schwartz and Pauline Ratner n' Bruce Witte.  A lovely party for a lovely girl, many happy returns, Sandra.

August 1949—1) "Gala Weekend Planned by TYL," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 5: The Temple Youth League will hold their annual Installation Dinner-Dance at the Chi-Chi Club on Saturday, August 20, 1949. -1951-
April 27, 1951—"Campaign in Clean-Up Stage—$70,000 Still Out," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 1: With the organization of the young People's Division, the opening of the Christian Campaign on the return of Ewart Goodwin from Israel, and Sunday's "Operation Magic Carpet," the Fund drive continued at a rapid pace.  Additional contributions this last week has brought the campaign total to $162,000, better than 65 percent of the 1951 commitments. Chairmen (Morris) Douglas and (Rodin) Horrow stated that results so far show a 25 percent increase in giving over last year with more than $70,000 worth of 1950 givers still to be heard from. Interest ran highest among the women, preparing for their clean-up, who have raised a total of $32,000 toward their $35,000 goal. They still have $4,000 worth of 1950 givers to be seen.  (Sarah) Goodrich, (Anne) Ratner and (Rose) Neumann, women's division chairmen, are busy formulating plans to bring in the balance swiftly.  The Young People's Division has divided itself into two—Young Adults under the direction of Art Goodman and Joan Steinman—Youth led by Al Davidson and Sandra Schissell.  First major event will be a dinner dance at Chi-Chi restaurant on Saturday evening, May 5, followed at a later date with a bang-up barbecue. Working with the chairmen of this division of "fun and work" are Fran Winicki, Dave Levens, Pauline Ratner, Eileen Gordon, Harvey Goodfreind, Herb Solomon, Phil Kplan, Dorothy Hess, Sue Hutler, Gary Breitbard, Shirley Krasner, Burton Sharpe, Bruce Witte, Ben Press, Lee Leherer. Coronado opened its campaign last week with dynamic William Penn as chairman and Ida Silverman again leading the women. Aiding penn are ARthur L. Cohen, Fund Board member, and last year's chairman. Spurred on by its outstanding citizen, Elmer Glaser, Oceanside has almost completed its solicitation to show an increase over 1950. Working with Glaser are Sam Finkel and Iz Rocklin.

May 11, 1951—Barbara Silber, "Gamma Gab," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 4: May's flowers are beginning to bud and so are Gamma Omega's plans. The blossoms and fruits of our labors promise to be both useful and entertaining. The first of our plans, a "Peach" of an idea, is our tribute to one of the most important elements of a family, "Mother." On her day Gamma Gals are having a tea at Fran Winicke's house in Point Loma for all Gamma Mothers. There will be entertainment, refreshments and a special surprise for our honored guests. "Through rain, sleet, or hail, Gamma Gals Never Fail."  This motto was proven beyond a doubt when the picnic scheduled for April 29 was rained out, (liquid sunshine to you proud Chamber of Commerce members). The picnickers and picnic adjourned to Pauline Ratner's house where everyone had a swell time.
