April 4, 1952— "J.W.V. Auxiliary," Southwestern
Jewish Press, page 18: The community is invited to attend the installation
of newly elected officers for Post 185 and Auxiliary to be held at the War
Memorial Bldg., Balboa Park, April 17 at 8 p.m. Refreshments will be served.
Installing Officer for the Post will be Harry Apelman, Post Commander, and Psst
Dept. Commander, Mrs. Ann Wager, who is President of Department of California
Auxiliary will install the auxiliary officers. Leo Mintz will install new
members. Post officers to be installed are: J. David Brooks, Commander;
Norman Gelman, Sr. VC; Louis Samuels, Jr. VC; Allan Lame, Judge Advocate;
Stanley Yukon, Quartermaster; Sidney Steckel, Adjutant; Sam Klug, Surgeon. Post
Trustees are Ben Snyder, Adolph Brodman, and Norman Wolf. Rabbi Morton J.Cohn is
Post Chaplain. Auxiliar Officers are Binnie Brooks, President: Lillian Yukon,
Sr. VP; Theresa Furst, Jr. VP; Nixie Kern, Cor. Secy; Ruth Hecht, Rec. Secy;
Angie Landau, Treas; Henrietta Cohen, Chaplain; Helen Cohen, Conductress; Ann

Guard; Celia Jacobs, Patriotic instructress; Jennie Turner, Historian. Binnie
Brooks will serve her second year as Auxiliary President and at the same time
her husband, J. David Brooks, will be Post Commander.

October 2005—"Chevrat
Bonim," The Shofar (monthly newsletter of Tifereth Israel Synagogue,
San Diego), page 7: The Chevrat Bonim (TIS' Legacy Society) inaugural party on
September 11th at the (Leslie and Jacob) Bercovitz home was a lovely event
honoring those who have pledged to leave a bequest to Tifereth Israel or have
set up endowments for the synagogue. Sylvia Hartman, a member of TICO (Tifereth
Israel Community Orchestra), played beautiful harp and piano pieces while guests
visited and enjoyed the view of El Cajon from the Bercovitz' patio. We
honor those who are leaving a legacy to TIS either by pledging a bequest or by
giving an endowment. (Endowment donors are bold). Irvin (z"l)
