Post No. 185 J.W.V. of the U.S.," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 6: A business meeting of the Jewish War Veterans Post 185 will be held Monday evening 8:00 p.m., June 6, 1949, at Temple Beth Israel. President Nixie Kern, JWV Auxil. will discuss plans and election of delegates, which will be held for the Department Convention for June 17-19 at Arrowhead Springs, Calif. Mr. and Mrs. Allan Lame and Mr. and Mrs. David Brooks will sponsor refreshments and a cake in honor of their sixth anniversary...

July 1949—"Jewish War Veterans Post 185," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 1: With the election of Manuel S. Fisher to Post Commander, Harry Aronoff to Senior Vice Commander, Sam Klug to Junior Vice Commander, Rabbi Morton J. Cohn as Chaplain, Ralph Feldman as Judge Advocate, Allan Lame as Quartermaster, David Brooks as Adjutant and Dave Frank as Officer of the Day, the Jewish War Veterans Post 185 began an active year. Under the guiding hand of Harry aronoff, that hard working team of Aronoff, Joe Shiffrenson and Joe Spatz planned and completed several fund raising affairs. The next affair a Card Party at Temple Center at 8 p.m. on July 10th is the next Post venture...

January 27, 1950—
(separate, no headline), Southwestern Jewish Press, page 4: Mr. A.P. Brooks, of Philadelphia, Pa., is visiting his son and daughter-in-law, David and Binnie Brooks, 7254 Fulton Street. After a visit to his niece in Los Angeles, he will return to San Diego for an extended vacation.

March 10, 1950—
"Jewish War Veterans Post 185 Auxiliary," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 9: ...An election of officers was held on Monday, March 6th (by the JWV Post 185). Those elected to officer were Commander, Harry Aronoff; Senior Vice Commander, Allen Lame; Junior Vice Commander, J. David Brooks, Judge Advocate, Manual Fisher, Surgeon, Stanley Yukon; Trustees, F. Randall, Robert Siegel, Marshall Roth; Quartermaster, Marshall Starr; Adjutant, Abe Wilks.

March 28, 1950—"Jewish War Veterans, S.D. Post No. 185," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 23: Installation ceremonies for the new officers of the Jewish War Veterans Post No. 185 will be held "April 17th at Temple Beth Israel. Commander Manuel Fisher will hand the reins of Post leadership to Harry Aronoff. Other officers to be installed are Alan Lame, sr. vice commander; David Brooks, jr. vice commander; S. Randall, trustee, and Manuel Fisher, judge advocate. The Post's Auxiliary is also holding its installation the same evening. Mrs. Nixie Kern will hand the gavel to President-Elect Esther Leavitt. Installing officer for the Auxiliary will be Ann Wager. Harry Apelman will do the honors for the Post. Ever capable Joe Spatz is in charge of arrangements for the gala evening...

April 14, 1950—"Jewish War Veterans Post. No. 185 and Auxiliary," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 7: A joint installation of the Jewish War Veterans Post No. 185 and Auxiliary will be held on April 17 at Temple Center, Third and Laurel Sts., at 8:00 p.m.  The officers of the Post will be installed by Harry Apelman, Past Dept. Commander, and National Dept. Chief of Staff, assisted by Sam Rose, National Executive Deputy of the State of California. Officers to be installed are: Harry Aronoff, Commander; Allen Lame, Sr. Vice Commander; J. David Brooks, Jr., Vice Commander; Manuel Fisher, Judge Advocate; Marshall Star, Quartermaster; Abe Wilks, Adjutant, Stanley Yukon, Surgeon; Sol Randall, Bob Seigel and Marshall Roth, Trustees.  Installing officers for the Ladies Auxiliary are Mrs. Ann Wag, dept. President of the Ladies' Auxiliary of the State of Calif. She will be assisted by Mrs. Jean Edelstein, Past Dept. President of the State of Calif. Officers to be installed are Esther Levitt, President; Eva Rerger, Sr. Vice President; Lil Yukon, Jr. Vice President; Angie Landau, Treasurer; Binnie Brooks, Corresponding Secretary; Henrietta Cohen, Chaplain; Rose Tepper, Guard; Anne Schloss, Conductress; Celia Jacobs, Goldie Goldstein and Esther Frank, Trustees. Chairman for the evening are Joe Spatz and Anne Schloss. An interesting program has been planned and refreshments will be served by Paulie Rubel and her committee—Anne Schloss.

April 28, 1950—1) "Jewish War Veterans Post No. 185 and Auxiliary," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 8:  In an impressive ceremony held April 17 at Temple Center, San Diego Post 185 of the Jewish War Veterans installed Harry G. Aronoff as commander of the organization, succeeding Manuel S. Fisher. The Post also installed Allen Lame, Sr. Vice Commander, and J. David Brooks, Jr. Vice Commander.  Installing officer was Harry Apelman.  Other organizations, notably the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Spanish-American War Veterans, Order of the Purple Heart and Catholic War Veterans attended the installation. Mrs. Esther Levitt was installed as President of the Auxiliary, succeeding Mrs. Nixie Kern. Mrs. Ann Wager, Department of California Auxiliary President was the installing officer. Past Department President, Jean Edelstein assisted in the ceremonies—David Brooks.

2) "Magic Carpet Day, Sunday, April 30th: Be A Worker or Stay at Home Until A Worker Calls on You," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 16:  Over 150 "Modern Miracle Workers" are expected to participate in San Diego's "Operation Magic Carpet" this Sunday, April 30th, Morris Douglas, chairman of the day, stated. Gathering for instructions at Beth Israel Center, the workers will breakfast (courtesy of the Jolly Sixteen) at 9:30 a.m., receive their lists and be off to knock on doors on behalf of the "Keep the Miracle Alive" Campaign of the United Jewish Fund.  "Magic Carpet Day," said Douglas, "is an effort to dramatically call to the attention of the Jews of San Diego, the needs of the Jews of Europe, Africa and the Moslem countries, as well as Israel, and to have the greatest possible coverage in the history of any campaign. We hope that our Miracle Workers will cover over 1200 prospects on this one day."  All organizations have helped in the recruitment of workers. To date, the following workers have signed their pledge to be the crew of the "Magic Carpet":  .... Dave Brooks...

July 7, 1950—1) "Jewish War Veterans," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 8:  San Diego Post 185 and Auxiliary will sponsor a public picnic to be held July 23 at Pepper Grove. Special arrangements are being planned for the children's amusement.  A full program is arranged for the morning and afternoon.  The Post meets every 1st and 3rd Monday evening at 8:00 p.m. at 3rd and Laurel Streets. All former veterans and women with a veteran's connection are urged to join this organization to carry on their work at the Naval Hospital, children's rehabilitation and national work in A.D.L. —J. 2) "S.D. Post No. 185 Jewish War Veterans," Southwestern Jewish Press, Page 8:  San Diego Post 185 and Auxiliary Jewish War Veterans have scheduled the following events. A public picnic at Pepper Grove in Balboa Park for Sunday, July 23.  The public is invited to the veterans sponsored "Corny-Carnival Night" to be held at Post 185's new home in Balboa Park at the Veterans Memorial Building. A film, "The Nuremberg Trials" will be shown Monday, Oct. 16, 8 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Building, Balboa Park. The public is invited. November 5, the Post will give their "Old Time" vaudeville show at the Veterans Memorial Building. Anybody wanting to get into the act can contact Sam Rose, H 6-0583.  Commander Harry Aronoff is again asking all veterans to join the Post. August 4, 1950—"Jewish War Veterans," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 8: San Diego Post 185 Jewish War Veterans and Auxiliary are holding their picnic at Pepper Grove in Balboa Park August 6, beginning at 10 a.m. The community is cordially invited and urged to bring their children. Tables will be available for lunches. A real old fashioned picnic is promised. The Post will hold a business meeting at the war Memorial Bldg., Balboa Park, August 7 at 8 p.m. All those desiring information regarding their enlistment status will be helped at this meeting. commander Harry Aronoff will be available to advise all former veterans—J. August 18, 1950—1) "Volunteers for Blood Bank Needed," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 1: The Blood Bank in San Diego is planning a Jewish Veterans Day.  It is suggested that those desiring to donate their blood do so in memory of a departed veteran. All volunteers should call J. David Brooks, Jr. Vice Commander of SD Post 185, W. 7-0867.  Leave your name and address and a card will be sent telling you when to appear at the Blood Bank...

2) "Jewish War Veterans," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 7:  On Saturday evening, August 19, Temple Center will be the setting for the Jewish War Veterans "Corny Carnival."  Admission is free and a $185.00 Kaiser Dishwashing Machine will go to some lucky person present. There will be other worthwhile prizes given away that evening and all who attend are promised an evening of fun. These Carnival Nights are for the purpose of raising money for the Post's Naval Hospital program, and it behooves the community to come out and support their work. The War Veterans and Auxiliary are the only organizations permitted to pass into the hospital and the work that has been done in the last five years is a credit to the Jewish community.  Now that U.S. men are bearing arms in Korea, a heavier load will be put on the shoulders of Post 185. With the support of the community the load will be lightened.  The Post's work will not be stopped as long as an injured veteran is in the hospital—J. David Brooks, Jr. Vice Commander.

September 8, 1950—"Jewish War Veterans and Auxiliary," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 5: The regular meeting of the Jewish War Veterans and Auxiliary will be held on September 18 at the War Memorial Building, Upas and Park Blvd., at 8:00 p.m. The business meeting will be followed by a social.—J. April 13, 1951—
"Jewish War Veterans," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 17: Post 185 will hold installation of officers at the War Memorial Bldg, Balboa park, April 16, at 8:30 p.m. Incoming officers are Allan Lame, Commander; J. David Brooks, Sr. Vice Commander; Norman Gelman, Jr. Vice Commander.  The community is cordially invited to attend the ceremonies and to inspect the new building and grounds.  Notables of other Posts will attend.  Department Commander Alvin Malinow, will be installing officer.  Outgoing Commander, Harry Aronoff, will be presented the Past Commander pin.

Auxiliary," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 18: The community is invited to attend the installation of newly elected officers for Post 185 and Auxiliary to be held at the War Memorial Bldg., Balboa Park, April 17 at 8 p.m. Refreshments will be served. Installing Officer for the Post will be Harry Apelman, Post Commander, and Past Dept. Commander, Mrs. Ann Wager, who is President of Department of California Auxiliary will install the auxiliary officers. Leo Mintz will install new members.  Post officers to be installed are: J. David Brooks, Commander; Norman Gelman, Sr. VC; Louis Samuels, Jr. VC; Allan Lame, Judge Advocate; Stanley Yukon, Quartermaster; Sidney Steckel, Adjutant; Sam Klug, Surgeon. Post Trustees are Ben Snyder, Adolph Brodman, and Norman Wolf. Rabbi Morton J.Cohn is Post Chaplain. Auxiliary Officers are Binnie Brooks, President: Lillian Yukon, Sr. VP; Theresa Furst, Jr. VP; Nixie Kern, Cor. Secy; Ruth Hecht, Rec. Binnie Brooks will serve her second year as Auxiliary President and at the same time her husband, J. David Brooks, will be Post Commander.

April 18, 1952—1) "Schwartz-Shall Marriage Told," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 3: Mr. and Mrs. Jack Schwartz of San Diego, announce the marriage of their son, Bernard, to Nannette Tobey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Shall, in Los Angeles on April 6th. Rabbi Max Borstan of Pasadena Synagogue officiated. Bridemaid was Ruth Anna Schwartz, best man was Lt. Herbert Newmark and Sanford Hirsch was the ring bearer.  After a week's honeymoon at Yosemite Park, the young couple will reside at 1619 E. 3rd St., Oakland, Calif. The bride is a teacher at the Oakland City Schools and the groom is employed at the Mission Community Center in San Francisco. Visitors attending the wedding from San Deigo were Messrs and Mmes. Morris Stokes, Robert Imberman, Morris Hirsch, Frank Kennin, Wm. Rodney, Jules Schwitkis, Simon Rich, Henry Goldy, Julius Newmark, Marshal Naiman, Wm. Schwartz, Jack Weinberg, Lloyd Lienhart, Jos. Gelman, David Brooks, Richard Disraeli, Irwin Green and Dr. and Mrs. Jos. Giovanazzi.

2) "Jewish War Veterans," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 5: Newly elected officers of San Diego Post 185, Jewish War Veterans and Auxiliary were installed in an impressive ceremony at War Memorial Bldg, April 17th. The senior officers installed were J. david Brooks, Commander; Norman Gelman, Sr. V.C.; Louis Samuels, Jr. V.C. For the Auxiliary, Binnie Brooks, President; Lillian Yukon, Sr. V.P.; Theresa Furst, JR. V.P. Commander Brooks spoke on fighting communism....
