June 19, 1947—"Hadassah," Southwestern Jewish Press, page
6: The San Diego Chapter of Hadassah concluded its season's activities with the
holding of the annual Donor's Luncheon at the El Cortez Hotel on Wednesday, June
11th. The out-going president Mrs. Louis Steinman greeted the assembled
gathering of more than 200. Mrs. Steinman, who has served the local chapter as
president for more than two years, was presented with a framed certificate in
token of her years of service. The certificate stated that her name was
inscribed in the Golden Book of the Jewish National Fund. A precedent was
established by holding installation ceremonies at the Donor's Luncheon, instead
of at the first meeting in September. The reason given for the change as
explained by Mrs. Abe Nasatir, who conducted the proceedings was that the summer
months would offer opportunity for new officers to get acquainted and to plan
for the coming year. Mrs. Gabriel Berg was seated as president, succeeding Mrs.
Steinman. Other officers installed were Mmes. Louis Bickman, Nate Ratner, Manuel
Haffner, Vice Presidents, Fred Kaufman, Recording Se'y, Alvin May, Corresponding
Sec'y, Al Slayen, Treasurer, Robert Burkhart, Financial Sec'y and Bea Cochran,
Auditor. Mrs. Louis Bickman, chairman of the Hadassah Medical
Organization, reported on funds raised during the year. The one fund raising
event, "Premier Night" held last March at the State Theatre, was
highly successful for it aided the local chapter to exceed its quota by $2000.
Net proceeds for the event was $3500. The audience was delighted with the
entertainment provided by Leon Belasco and Jacque Press and Mrs. Irwin Riss,
Southern Coast Regional Vice President of Hadassah, gave a stirring political
address. The invocation and benediction was given by Rabbi Moise Bergman.
July 3, 1947—"The Way We Heard It...," Southwestern Jewish
Press, page 4: Mrs. Gabriel Berg, newly installed president of the local
chapter of Hadassah, was in Los Angeles over the week-end where she attended the
Los Angeles Hadassah Chapter's annual Donor Luncheon at the Biltmore. Mrs. Berg
was a guest at the speaker's table..
August 7, 1947— 1) "Jewish Press to Suspend Publication: Decision
Announced at Meeting of Representatives," Southwestern Jewish Press, page
1: At a meeting held at the home of the publisher and editor of the Southwestern
Jewish Press, Mr. and Mr. Lewis Solomon, on Monday evening, announcement was
made that publication of the paper would be temporarily suspended. The
meeting, which was attended by these representatives of these organizations: Mr.
S. Goldberger for Beth Jacob Congregation, Arleen Fleischman and Bella Mash for
the B'nai B'rith Girls; Mrs. Esther Schwartz for the B'nai B'rith Women; Morrie
Douglas for B'nai B'rith Lasker Lodge and the United Jewish Fund; Mr. Sol Blanc
for Congregation Tifereth Israel; Mrs. Jack Rosenblum for the Council of Jewish
Women; Mrs. Jennie Siner for the Daughters of Israel; Mrs. Marie Berg for
Hadassah; Maynard Horowitz for the Haveros; Mrs. Anna Shelley for
the J.C.R.A.; MRs. Bess Addleson for the Ladies Auxiliary of the Hebrew Home for
the Aged; Mr. Joe Wertheim for the J.C.S.C.; Mrs. Rose Solomon for the Junior
Charity League; Mr. Phil Goldman for the Yo-Ma-Co; Julie Schneider for the Alpha
Phi Pi; Mrs. Ruth Aronoff for the Beth Jacob Ladies Auxiliary; Mr. Ben Feinberg
for the Jewish Labor Committee; Larry Solomon for the Temple Youth League; Mr.
Carl Esenoff for the Jewish Welfare Society; Rabbi Morton J. Cohn; and Miss
Esther Siegel of the Jewish Welfare Board; was called by Mrs. Solomon to
acquaint the heads of the organizations with the reason for the necessity of the
temporary suspension. Much discussion of the problem was participated in by the
representatives and many suggestions were made. A regret for even the temporary
loss of the paper was unanimously expressed and the ensuing five weeks will be
used by the organization representatives as well as by a committee that will
meet to attempt to find a workable solution of the problem which was
presented. The Jewish press hopes to resume publication of its regular
issues in the near future.
2) "Young Folks Zionist Group Formed," Southwestern Jewish Press, page
1: A new Youth group has appeared on San Diego's ever growing horizon in the
form of an organization carrying an important message for young Jewish men and
women...The group though still in its infant stage is gaining intellectual
nourishment through the discussions held each week on important phases of
Zionism. A form of panel discussion is held where either a member of the
group or an outside speaker presents a topic for discussion; a question and
answer period ensues; general discussion follows, and the meeting is topped off
with refreshments by the gracious hosts of the evening. We meet at different
member's house each week. Besides food for thought, you will meet some swell
people your own age, have some fun and really enjoy a well-rounded evening. Our
next meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. Marie Berg, 4825 Adams Avenue, on
Wedneday, August 14th, at 8 p.m. Should you desire further information about the

April 1949—"United Jewish Fund Campaign for $309,000 to Open This
Week," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 7: Saul Chenkin and Louis
Steinman, outstanding members of the San Diego Jewish community, will lead the
1949 combined United Jewish Appeal for $309,000, according to an announcement by
the Board of Directors of the United Jewish Fund released by Eli H. Levinson.
President Chenkin and Steinman are planning an all out campaign with complete
coverage of every Jewish person in the community and the outlying districts in
the county. Plan of organization includes a gifts divisions, various trades and
professions division, the women's organization, young people's division and a
Christian campaign. The women's division will be headed by two of the
outstanding women in the community, Mrs. Nathaniel Ratner, serving as chairman,
and Mrs. Gabriel Berg, President of Hadassah, as co-chairman. A series of
luncheons are being planned under the direction of the women's division campaign
advisory committee of Mrs. Saul Chenkin, last year's chairman, now a member oft
he Board of Directors of the National Women's Division, United Appeal, Mrs.
Selma Getz, Mrs. Louis Steinman, and Mrs. A.P. Nasatir—1948's cochairmen. Saul Chenkin has appointed the following leaders in the
campaign to date. To head the men's division set up, Murray Goodrich, Max
Rabinowitz, Morris Douglas and Al Krasnow, co-chairmen. Lawrence Antor of Cantor
Brothers will again lead the auto accessories. Building trades will be led by
milo Berenson, Sid Goldhammer and John Ruskin; Clothing by Its Penter, Sam
Rassin and Milton Roberts; furniture by Victor Schulman and Ben Harris;
groceries by Seymour Rabin; jewelry by Nathan Baranov and Sam Druskin; liquor by
Harry Farb, Morris Feldman and Maurice Harris; professional by Carl
Esenoff, Sol Price, Lew
Weiss, Richard Levi and Dr. Robert Stone; locker club, tailors, cleaners by Abe
Sklar, Eddie Kitaen and Ben Feinberg; surplus and salvage by Ed Bland. Other
appointments will be made in the near future. "1949 is a Year of
Opportunity" in which we (will) be able to empty the DP Camps. It is a year
of Exodus, according to the campaign co-chairmen, Saul Chenkin and Louis
Steinman who made a joint statement in which they clarified the dollar and cents
aspect of the mammoth job to be done. They pointed out that the irreducible
minimum goal of the United Jewish Appeal for 1949 is $250,000,000. San Diego
accepted a goal of $309,000 of which at least 75 percent will be used for the
United Jewish Appeal and its three constituent agencies. The remainder will be
allocated to the other 35 local, national and international organizations
supported by the United Jewish Fund. "This year the remaining 125,000 Jews
must be moved out of the DP Camps. Jews scattered through Rumania, Hungary,
Poland, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia and Bulgaria must receive cash and food,
relief and immigration where possible. One million Jews in North Africa and
Moslem countries are existing under the most degrading conditions imaginable and
must receive aid through the Joint Distribution Committee. In Israel
housing must be provided for 250,000 people who are expected in 1949. In
the United States, the United Service for New Americans must be prepared to
receive upwards of 25,000 Jewish refugees expected to immigrate here," the
chairman emphasized. United Jewish Fund headquarters are in Suite 301, 333

May 1949—1) "Fund Leaders Attend Celebration of
First Anniversary of The Republic of Israel," Southwestern Jewish Press,
page 1: Mr. and Mrs. Saul Chenkin are in New York where they attended the
celebration of the first anniversary of the new Republic of Israel as the guests
of Chaim Weizmann, first president of the new state. The Chenkins took
with them a check for $25,000.00 from the United Jewish Fund of San Diego, which
was delivered to the National Campaign leaders as an advance on the San Diego
quota for 1949. That brings to $100,00.00 the
amounts advanced so far this year, according to Al Hutler, Executive
Director of the Fund, against the quota of over $300,000 to be raised...The
women's division will hold the third in a series of luncheons on May 24 at the
El Cortez Hotel. Every Jewish woman in the city has been invited to
attend. $28,000 has been raised by this group so far under the eladership of
Mrs. Nathaniel Ratner and Mrs. Gabriel Berg. While the Chenkins are in the
East, Louis Steinman will continue as chairman of the "Year of
Opportunity" Campaign...
2) Mrs. Gabriel Berg, president, announces that Hadassah's Donor luncheon will
be held June 8. Mrs. Anedythe Halprin of Oregon, past National President
of Hadassah, will be guest speaker. Mrs. Manuel Haffner heads the committee in
charge of this luncheon...
June 1949—1) "Leaders Spur Activities to Complete 1949 Fund
Drive," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 1: Led by the Women's
Division, which concluded its "luncheon" drive last week, the United
Jewish Fund 1949 "Year of Opportunity" Campaign has raised over
$156,000.000 in pledges. Two hundred women were guests of Msdms. Jennie Burnett,
Max Gardner, H.D. Goodrich, Jack Gross, Rodin Horrow, George Neumann, Sam
Perlmutter, Abe Ratner, Victor Schulman, Abe Sklar, Esther Sommers, and
Harry Snyder at a "no minimum" birthday party luncheon which raised
$5,500 to bring the total women's contribution of over $35,000.000 or 87 percent
of the goal they have set for themselves. Recognized as one of the outstanding
Women's Divisions in the United States, the ladies, under the leadership of MRs.
Nathaniel Ratner, chairman, and Mrs. Gabrial (sic, Gabriel) Berg, co-chairman,
have had three luncheons starting with a $250 minimum given by Mrs. Sewlma Getz.
Following that successful luncheon, Mesdames Samuel Ratner, Gabrial (sic,
Gabriel) Berg, Saul Chenkin and Lois Steinman sponsored a $100 minimum luncheon
for over one-hundred women...

July 1949—1) "United Jewish Fund," Southwestern Jewish Press,
pages 1, 2: 1948=1949 is the sixteenth year of activity of the United Jewish
Fund of San Diego. A review oft his year shows continued progress in community
activity. Progress of the fund has gone hand in hand with growth and
understanding of the Jewish.Community. For the first time in its long history
the United Jewish Fund has awarded the most coveted national award of the
Council of Federations and Welfare Funds the "Year Around Materials
Award" for communities of 10,000 population. Eli H. Levenson was reelected president of the Fund for a
third and final term. Aiding him as vice presidents are Morrie Douglas, Saul
Chenkin, and Sol Price. Mrs. Gabriel Berg was elected secretary to become
the first woman to hold office, while Max Rabinowitz was elected treasurer. When
first organized some sixteen years ago the Fund was solely a Fund raising and
disbursing agency. Today it has de eloped into a Jewish Community organization
that not only raises funds in one joint campaign, but plans, finances and aids
in the coordination of various Jewish agencies in the community. More anhd more
in this year local needs have been taken into consideration and met by the Fund
board of directors. In planning for better communal life in San Diego, The Fund
has assisted in the creation, and today sponsors. The Jewish Education
Commission which operates the Institute for Jewish Studies. The first two
semesters of the institute received national acclaim in several magazines and
from the American Association of Jewish Education. Thirteen courses
catered to over 150 adults interested in learning Hebrew, Yiddish, Jewish
History, Sociology, Ceremonies, Cooking, Literature, and Philosophy. Dr. A. P.
Nasatir is chairman. The fall semester will open on October th (sic). Realizing
that there was a need in the community for small loans to be made available for
emergencies, the fund created the Jewish Loan Fund Committee which has made
several loans since its existence. Morris Niederman is chairman of the
committee, and directly responsible for its operation. Center activity
(Morris Douglas, chairman) for young people increased in tempo until Esther
Siegel was hurt in an automobile accident. Sunday night dances, as well as
ballroom dancing for the teen-agers were most successful but had to be dropped
with the loss of Miss Siegel. The most successful day camp was opened two weeks
ago with a registration of 83 children between the ages of 5 and 12 years old.
Children are also going to be taken to Camp Palomar for a period of eleven days
from July 18th to July 29th. The Center activity and group work program, started
as an experiment, proved so successful that joint personnel committee of the
Fund and the center have hired Irwin Wohl, who recently received his masters
degree in social work as activities director. It is hoped that the
stimulus given by a full time group worker will be the first step in the
creation of the long awaited community center. One of the most encouraging
movements of the year was the creation of the Federation Committee consisting of
representatives of Jewish Welfare agencies. Recently the articles of
Incorporation for a San Diego Federation of Jewish welfare Agencies was
received, and By-Laws are now being discussed by the agencies which are
affected. The Community Relations Committee continued to work closely with the
American Jewish Committee, the Anti-Defamation League, the American Jewish
Congress and the Jewish War Veterans in creating one body to fight anti-Semitism
and other undemocratic actions in the community. The committee worked closely
with the school system, the Pacific Coast Council for Intercultural Education,
the California Council for Civic Unity and the Community Welfare Council of San
Diego. A film library containing outstanding films on the subject of
intergroup relationships was started and has been used by numerous church and
civic groups as well as many Jewish organizations. The committee secured a 16mm
projector for use by groups. Ten Emigre units were received in the community
during this period and handled by the Emigre Committee of the United Jewish Fund
and the San Diego Section of the Council of Jeiwsh Women. Assurances have been
given for 32 more units who will arrive in San Diego in the next year. The
President's Council has continued to function as a clearing house and
coordinating group for all organizations in the community. Under its sponsorship
"The Bulletin" is published twice a month. It contains primarily local
news and is open to all organizations. The 1949 '"Year of
Opportunity" Campaign raised $185,000 to date from over 1350 contributors.
Last year's campaign secured $270,000 in pledges from 1800 contributors. The
1949 campaign is far from over with 500 good prospects still to be heard from of
which 100 gave $60,000 in 1948. Sol Chenkin and Louis Steinman are leading the
campaign. The Women's Division, under the inspired leadership of Mrs.
Nathaniel Ratner and Mrs. Gabriel Berg, again did an excellent job and have
raised over $37,000 to date. At the end of the 1948 campaign $200,000 or
80 percent of the money raised went to the United Jewish Appeal. Only 10 percent
of the money raised stayed in the local community for local agency needs and
campaign costs. The balance went to overseas and national organizations such as
Hias, civic protective groups, hospitals, religious and educational
institutions. The outstanding achievement of the year was the cooperation of all
the organizations, and especially the growing awareness of the need for a strong
central coordinating, planning, financing and public relations agency which
could speak for the Jewish Community in the fields in which it was involved. The
cooperation between the Jewish welfare Society and the United Jewish Fund could
well set the example for good community relationships. Instead of setting up
separate organizations to handle the Refugees, and the loan fund the Jewish
Welfare Society facilities have been used. The United Jewish Fund's primary
purpose is not to raise and distribute money. It has a far more important
purpose—to serve the entire community in a democratic and American way without
regard to the amount of the individual contributions.
2) "Clubs In Review: Hadassah," Southwestern
Jewish Press, pages, 1, 3: Culminating a successful and progressive year of
activity, the San Diego Chapter of Hadassah closed its 1948-1949 season with
their Donor Luncheon held at Imig Manor Hotel in June. On that occasion, the
re-elected President, Mrs. Gabriel Berg, gave a comprehensive report of all of
the activities of the local Chapter for the closing year. The guest speaker,
Mrs. David Halpern, National Vice President, told of the broad scope of work of
Hadassah in the new State of Israel, which has become so extensive that space
permits only a brief reference to some of the most important projects...The San
Diego Chapter is an important link in this National organization. How important
is evidenced by its selection as the Pacific Southwest Regional Convention
meeting place in 1948 which hundreds of delegates from the southwest part of the
United States attended. Members of the San Diego Chapter have been selected to
serve on the Regional Board. Delegates have also been sent to the National
Conventions and November will doubtless see a number of delegates to the 35tgh
Annual Convention which will be held in San Francisco this year...
3) "Clubs in Review: San Diego Hebrew Home for the Aged Auxiliary," Southwestern
Jewish Press, pages , 10:: The Auxiliary of the San Diego Home for the Aged
held its final event of the season with the annual May Day Luncheon. The
following officers were installed by Mrs. A.P. Nasatir to the theme of Apple
Blossom Time. President: Mrs. Zel Greenberg; first vice president, Mrs.

November 14, 1949—1) "Hadassah
Annual Convention to Be November 13th," Southwestern Jewish Press, page
5: The National Annual Convention of Hadassah will be opened at the Hotel
Fairmount, San Francisco, on Sunday, November 13th and will continue until
Wednesday, November 16th. Marie Berg, President, announces that a large group of
San Diegans will attend. Mrs. Berg will give a report on the convention upon her
return. Among those who have accepted an invitation to speak are Rabbi Max
Nussbaum of Los Angeles and Rabbi Roland Gittlesohn, who was stationed here as a
Chaplain in the Marine Corps...
2) "Fund Requests Pledge Payments," Southwestern
Jewish Press, page 8: The officers and directors of the United Jewish Fund
are pleading with members of the Jewish community to make good their pledges now
so that cash will be available to forward to the United Jewish Appeal in an
emergency crisis....Members of the (Allocations) Committee met at a Brunch in
the Franciscan Room of the El Cortez Hotel on Sunday, October 23rd, to make the
final recommendations for allocations to the United Jewish Fund Board of
Directors. Committee members are: Mrs. Gabriel Berg, chairman; Mr. Nate

November 18, 1949— "Local Leaders To Be Honored At Annual United
Jewish Fund Meeting," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 1: Eli H.
Levenson, president of the United Jewish Fund, will be honored by the Jewish
community of San Diego on Sunday, November 27, at the 16th annual meeting of the
United Jewish Fund. Three years of service as President of the United Jewish
Fund, as an Executive Board member of the district B'nai B'rith and as an active
participant in civic affairs, he will be rewarded as his fellow citizens gather
to pay homage to this young lawyer. Tribute will also be paid to an older lawyer,
Judge
Jacob Weinberger, on his return as the Resident Judge in San Diego. Judge
Weinberger was the first president of the fund and did much to bring it into
existence. Saul Chenkin and Louis Steinman, co-chairmen of the 1949 campaign,
and other outstanding members of the San Diego community, will be honored for
their leadership in the 1949 Campaign. Along with them outstanding community
leaders will be announced by the "Key Club," which will induct new
members who receive the "Key Men's Award" for service to the
community. The disbursement of funds raised in the 1949 Campaign will be
announced, and a report received from the Nomination Committee. Elections of members to the Board of Directors will be one of the
highlights of the annual meeting. Nominees are Dr. A.P. Nasatir, for a
one-year term; for a two-year term, Mrs. Gabriel Berg, M.S. Berlin, Edward
Bland, Saul Chenkin, I.L. Domnitz, Morris Douglas, Maurice Harris, Rodin Horrow,
Morris Niederman, Abe Ratner, Milton Roberts, Abe Schiller, Al Neumann, Dr. R.M.

December 2, 1949—1) "United Jewish Fund Observes 16th
Anniversary at Nov. 27th Meeting," Southwestern Jewish Press, page
1: Approximately 200 people gathered to pay tribute to Eli H. Levenson,
retiring president of the United Jewish Fund, at the 16th Annual Meeting on
Sunday, November 27th. Judge Jacob Weinberger was also honored and
officially welcomed back to San Diego. The Judge acted as Chairman for the
dinner meeting. Many leaders were honored for their outstanding work on behalf
of the Fund. Morrie Douglas was Program Chairman, Saul Chenkin submitted the
Treasurer's Report, and Marie Berg reported for the Allocations Committee.
Dr. A.P. Nassatir presented the slate of new board members selected by the
nominating committee which received unanimous approval. Albert Hutler,
Director of the Fund, indicated in his report that the greater part of the money
raised in 1949 was sent to the United Jewish Appeal. The low cost of running the
campaign also drew approval.. Rabbi Morton Cohn, Rose Neumann, Henry Weinberger,
Sally Ratner and Murray Goodrich joined in praising the work of Eli Levenson.
Mr. Douglas presented him with a gift from the Board of Directors of the fund.
In his annual report to the community, Mr. Levenson praised the work of the
various committees who had assisted him in the 1949 Campaign. Eli responded to
the many speakers who lauded his efforts and his devotion during the three years
he headed the Fund. He told of the many new organizations which have been
sponsored by the Fund during his term of office. These include the Federation of
Jewish Agencies and the Jewish Center Association. Mr. Levenson also warned the
Community regarding the lack of leadership and the failure of competent men to
accept responsibility. He also called attention to the fact that differences of
opinion exist in all Jewish Communities, as in San Diego, on the role of
religion in the Jewish life. Mr. Levenson further stated that "The
indictment had been made that we, as individuals, have become secularists and as
such, have forgotten our religious heritage, and the roots from which our
charitable inclinations stem, closing our eyes to the needs of our religious
institutions. There appears on the horizion in our community a deliberate plan
and pattern to control the fund raising, the allocations and the disbursal of
funds from our own United Jewish Fund, by those same individuals for their own
interest." Mr. Levenson indicated that even in Israel these same problems
are now being faced. He quoted from Chaim Weizmann's book, "Trial and
Error." He also warned against duplication of effort by
over-organization and selfish interests. "Too often leadership is acquired
by those who aspire to leadership merely for the purpose of being known as
leaders." Mr. Levenson closed by saying "Factionalism and
partisanship—specialization of activity through unnecessary
organization—failure to develop community leadership and lack of desire of
those qualified to accept responsibility of leadership, are the focal points of
danger against which we must always maintain our guards. The combination of
these dangers could well become a most destructive force in the tearing down of
the Jewish community."
2) "Hadassah," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 6: The next
meeting of the San Diego Section of Hadassah, the Women's Zionist Organization
of America, promises to be an outstanding one. The meeting which will be
held on Wednesday, December 14th, will e in the form of a "Reciprocity
Meeting" to which all Jewish women have been invited...Starting with a
snack luncheon, a major feature of the meeting will be a talk by an outstanding
regional director of Hadassah, whose subject will be "The Medical Scene in
Israel." Although an invitation has been extended by mail to the
women of all the organizations in San Diego to attend this meeting, Mrs. Gabriel
Berg, president of the San Diego Section of Hadassah, cordially invite(s) anyone
not so affiliated to be present on December 14th at Temple Center, 3rd and
Laurel Strts. The meeting will be featured by a report on the National
Convention which took place two weeks ago in San Francisco where representatives
from the 1025 chapters of Hadassah with its overall membership of 270,000 women
gathered to discuss future policies and work of Hadassah. San Diego was
represented by three delegates, Mesdames Gabriel Berg, Louis Steinman and Al E.
Slayen, although a contingent of twenty three guests attended the Convention
from SanDeigo. Highlights of the Convention which Mrs. Berg will touch on
are the opening address in the San Francisco Opera House by Mr. Oscar Chapman,
the Secretary of the Interior, who brought greetings from President Harry S.
Truman and MR. Truman's re-avowal of friendship to Israel. The delegates
will also tell of the reelection for the third term as National President fMRs.
Samuel Halprin, whose keynote address was "We Keep Our Pledges to
Israel." They will also tell of hearing the inimitable Eddie Cantor, the
noted stage and radio star and great humanitarian, address Youth Aliyah and of
hearing a fine panel discussion on "Dual Loyalties" in which Rabbi Max
Nussbaum, Mr. Roland Gittleson and a Professor of religion from a midwestern
college participated...
December 16, 1949—1) "Victor Schulman Elected to Head United
Jewish Fund," Southwestern Jewish Press, pages 1, 28: Victor
Schulman was elected President of the United Jewish Fund of San Diego last week
at the first meeting of the new Board of Directors. Elected by unanimous vote,
Schulman continues the young dynamic leadership which has carried the Fund
forward. Considered one of the outstanding young business men in San
Diego, the new President of the Fund has devoted a great deal of time to civic
activities and Jewish communal affairs. As chairman of the 1947 Allocations
Committee, he introduced a pattern which drew national attention and which is
now being practiced in many communities along the West Coast. With the
assistance of his close friend, Jack Gross, Schulman guided the 1948 campaign in
such a successful manner that it raised the largest amount in the history of the
Jewish community of San Diego. In his very short acceptance talk before
the Board, he stated, "I thank the Board for this honor and I hope that I
will be worthy of it." The first vice presidency of the fund will be filled
by Murray D. Goodrich and the second vice presidency by Morris W. Douglas.
Reelected to Secretary and Treasurer respectively were Mrs. Gabriel Berg and Max
Rabinowitz. In a hotly fought contest for the Executive Committee, the following
were elected: Eli H. Levenson, Abe Ratner, Sol Price, Nathan Schiller, Louis
Moorsteen, Ben Harris and Richard Levi. Eli H. Levenson, retiring president,
expressed his thanks to the members of the Board for their cooperation and the
community for its fine assistance and understanding in the period which he has
been the President of the United Jewish Fund.

2) "Hadassah," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 26: On December
14th, the San Diego Chapter of Hadassah held a luncheon meeting at the Temple
Center to which all Jewish women had been invited. Mrs. A.P. Nasatir gave a
beautiful program on the ritual of lighting the Chanukah candles. Mrs.
Gabriel Berg, gave a report on the National Convention recently held in San
Francisco. Among the interesting news highlights that Mrs. Berg brought
back from the convention were: News of the first fashion show of Israel couture,
at which fifteen fashions were displayed...the pledge of further aid by the
newly appointed Secretary of Interior, Oscar L. Chapman...Seven child refugee
houses to be named for Eddie Cantor...Hadassah raised more than $9,000,000
largest sum in its history. The local chapter of Hadassah has the largest
membership of any women's organization in San Diego, and has raised over $8,000
during the past year. All funds go toward health services in Israel. Mrs. Berg
stated that she is certain the local chapter will continue to grow, with the
ever increasing membership, and the enthusiastic support of its present
officers. At present Hadassah is the most outstanding recognized women's
organization in the United States.

6: The San Diego Chapter of Hadassah has scheduled a very important and
interesting event for the community for Saturday, January 21st, when the group
will show an Israel-made motion picture on one of Hadassah's most important
projects, "Youth Aliyah."...A special invitation is extended everyone

see where a portiion of the funds are used that Hadassah raises each year.

Film," Southwestern Jewish Press, pages 1,8: Three beautiful
traditional Jewish ceremonials, never before photographed for a motion picture
in their present form are the high spots of a unique hour-long feature film
entitled, "Tomorrow's a Wonderful Day," which will be released here at
the Hoover High School Auditorium on Jan. 21, under the sponsorship of the local
chapter of Hadassah, The Women's Zionist Organization of America. There is
a Hanukah ceremony, in which several hundred young refugees take part....; a
race by young runners from the historic caves of the Maccabees in northern
Palestine to nearby villages..... and the welcoming of the Sabbath bride,a
reverential Friday night ceremony.... Ticket chairman for the affair is Mrs.
Victor Seltan. The committee working with her is Mrs. Alan Schrieer, Mrs. Sam
Siraton, Mrs. Harry Nelson, and Mrs. William Schwartz. Tickets may be
obtained from any Hadassah member, according to Mrs. Gabriel Berg, president of
the San Diego chapter of Hadassah or by calling R-5171...
February 24, 1950—1) "Mrs. Selma Getz Leads Women's Division of
UJF," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 1: Pride of the Jewish
Community of San Diego, the Women's Division, are beginning to organize under
the dynamic leadership and guidance of Selma Getz, chairman of the 1850
campaign. An active participant and conscientious worker since the formation of
the Division, Mrs. Getz succeeds Mrs. Nathaniel Ratner and Mrs. Gabriel Berg,
who successfully led the women in 1949. Organized in 1947 under the
leadership of Mr. George Neumann, the Women's Division of San Diego went from
$3,000 in women's contributions in 1946 to $42,000 in 1948 when Mrs. Saul
Chenkin led the way. In 1949, $39,000 was reached, which on a percentage basis
local and national, was felt in excess of many other communities...
2) "Allocations Committee Sets New
Pattern," Southwestern Jewish Press, pages 1, 8: In an all day
session of the 1950 Allocations Committee, held last Sunday at the El Cortez
Hotel, a new precedent in disbursing monies to be raised was set for the San
Diego Jewish Community. For the first time, budgeting has been done prior to the
campaign so that the contributor will know how the money would be distributed.
The committee consisting of members of the Board of Directors of the Fund,
organization presidents and members at large, formulated a pattern for the
distribution of money raised in the 1950 campaign. Sol Price,
chairman of the committee, announced that of the first $150,000 raised, 83
percent was allocated for the United Jewish Appeal and other Israel overseas
agencies, 10 percent to local agencies and 7 percent to national agencies. Of
the next $50,000, 95 percent to the United Jewish Appeal and other overseas and
Israel agencies, and 5 percent to national agencies. All over this amount
would go to the United Jewish Appeal. According to Price's announcement the
following organizations will be beneficiaries of the 1950 campaign: United
Jewish Appeal, Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, Jewish Telegraphic Agency, American
Friends of the Hebrew University, American Committee for the Weizmann Institute
of Science, American Technion Society, American Fund for Israel Institutions,
National Committee for Labor Israel (Histadrut), City of Hope—JCRA, Jewish
Committee for Personal Service, Leo M. Levi Memorial Hospital, American Jewish
Congress, Jewish Labor Committee, Joint Defense Appeal, B'nai B'rith National
Youth Services Appeal; Yiddish Scientific Institute, American Association for
Jewish Education, Jewish War Veterans of the United States, National Jewish
Welfare Board, Synagogue Council of America, Training Bureau of Communal
Service, Hebrew Theological College, Jewish Theological Seminary, American
Hebrew Congregations, Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America, Yeshiva
University. The Allocations Committee heard Mr. Moritz Gottlieb, lay leader of
Allentown, Pa., representing the United Jewish Appeal, state that in 1949 San
Diego, in giving 88 percent of the monies raised through the United Jewish
Appeal, had done an outstanding job and that there were not too many communities
which had shouldered their responsibilities as well. Rabbi Leonard Greenberg,
Los Angeles , spoke for the American Jewish Congress. Histadrut's spokesman was
Sol Goodman, while Murray Goodrich represented the American Fund for Israel
Institutions. Henry Weinberger presented the case for B'nai B'rith Youth Service
Appeal. Members of the Allocations Committee, besides Price, were Victor

Mrs. Gabriel Berg succeeded Edward Breitbard as president of the Presidents
Council of San Diego, at the election held last week. Voted last year the
"outstanding Jewish woman in the community," Mrs. Berg is president of
Hadassah, Secretary of the United Jewish Fund and active in many other
organizations as well as civic affairs. Other officers elected to lead the
Council in 1950 were Mrs. Garvin of Bay City B'nai B'rith Chapter as Vice
President; Secretary, Mrs. Evelyn Hermann of the Pioneer Juniors and Treasurer,
Manuel Fisher, past commander of San Diego's Post of the Jewish War
Veterans. Organizations leaders in attendance at the meeting

2: The annual Southern Regional Conference of Hadassah will be held in Santa
Barbara from April 29 through May 2 inclusive. Headquarters for the conference

from the New York office of Hadassah, will be Mentor of the Conference.

2) "Second Anniversary of Israeli Independence To Be Celebrated," Southwestern
Jewish Press, pages 4, 6: A day long program of celebration by the San Diego
Jewish Community will mark the second anniversary of the rebirth of Israel which
falls this year on April 3rd, the Fifth of Iyar. Festivities which will be
initiated by the Cottage of Israel with a special program on the lawns of the
House of Pacific Relations will be climaxed by an evening program at the Temple
Center at 8:00 p.m. under the auspices of the San Diego Zionist Council.
"The Zionist Council believes that the occasion is one of great joy to the
entire community and calls for a program in which the community can
participate," according to a statement by its chairman, Mrs. S.I.
Goldhammer. Accordingly, the evening program will include musical and dancing
selections, as well as a brief panel discussion and greetings from civic
officials. The musical program will include selections sung by Cantor Julian
Miller, a duet by Norman Holtzman and Esther Weitzman, violin selections by Dr.
David Miller accompanied by Mrs. Belle Cohen, and modern Israeli dances and
songs by the IZFA Dance group. The audience will be invited to join in communal
singing led by Cantor Miller and will be encouraged to join in some Horas at the
conclusion of the program. Honored guests of the evening will include Mrs. Mary
Fay, member of the Board of Education and Chairman of the local chapter,
American Christian Palestine Committee, who will extend greetings from the
Committee. A brief panel discussion on the relationship of Israel and America
will include as speakers, Mrs. Gabriel Berg, who will discuss the necessity of
financial aid to Israel; Dr. A.P. Nasatir, who will point out the need for a
Zionist Public Relations program; Mrs. Meir Barach, whose subject will be
Chalutziot, and Rabbi Morton J. Cohn who will discuss education as the bridge

May 12, 1950—"Hadassah Conference," Southwestern Jewish
Press, page 3: Exhilarated and thrilled, a group of San Diego Hadassah women
have just returned from the Fifth Annual Southern Pacific Coast Regional
Conference held in Santa Barbara on April 29th through May 2nd. All agreed that
this was a most outstanding conference, packed full of educational and
entertaining sessions. One reason for this was the presence of Mrs. Walter G.
Lowdermilk, who was guest speaker at the banquet...Having just returned from a
trip to Africa, she saw first-hand the Yemenite Jews board the planes which flew
them via the "Magic Carpet" to Israel. Mrs. Lowdermilk, who is a
non-Jew, and a daughter of a Missionary, told of having been taught as a child
to believe that promise in the Bible of our people returning to their native
land would come true, and she expressed great gratitude that she had been able
to witness the miracle in part. Mentor for the Conference was Miss Hannah
Goldberg, National Education Chairman, who greatly inspired the delegates with
her knowledge of the tremendous educational work of Hadassah in this country. A
scoop for the San Diego chapter was the election of our own Marie Berg as
Regional Vice President in charge of organization. She also presided over a
fund-raising work-shop, while Mrs. Al Slayen and Mrs. David Block each gave well
rounded reports on membership and educational accomplishments respectively.
Those from our local chapter who attended were: Mrs. Gabriel Berg, Mrs.
Al Slayen, Mrs. David Block; Mrs. Libby Teacher and Mrs. Albert Krasnow. A most
gratifying event of the Conference was the presenting to Mrs. Krasnow "a
prize for the individual obtaining the greatest number of new members in any
Chapter within the Region." This was in the form of a silver wine goblet to
be engraved and sent from National. All of the local delegates returned feeling
that they had been truly inspired to continue the work in the San Diego Chapter,
which is only a link in the Hadassah chain across the nation. Each session and
workshop brought out wondrous reports of the tremendous projects which the
Hadassah have and are accomplishing. At a future meeting, the membership
will receive a first-hand report of some of these projects from the
delegates—Silvia Bickman, Publicity.

seminar, first of its kind here, will have as its central theme,

February 16, 1951—"April 1 Target Date for Fund
Drive," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 1: Appointment of the
chairmen for the 1951 Campaign of San Diego's United Jewish Fund will be
announced in the next issue of the Press, according to Victor Schulman, Fund
president. Target date for the opening of the Combined Jewish Appeal for
overseas, national and local needs will be April 1st, with Sunday April 29th
planned for the one-day solicitation in which San Diego gained national acclaim
in 1950. Reports from William Schwartz, Chairman of the Allocations Committee,
indicate that pre-campaign planning, on a percentage basis as accomplished in
1950, will be followed again in 1951. Four major fields of service will be
included, according to Schwartz, in the 1951 Campaign—Overseas and Israel,
National Agencies, Local Needs, and the Emigre Program. Carl Esenoff, San
Diego Federation of Jewish Agencies Leader, stated that local budgets would be
presented to the fund at its next meeting for inclusion in the 1951 Campaign.
Local organizations, deficit financed through the Federation and Fund in 1950,
were the Jewish Welfare Society, $4260; San Diego Hebrew Home for the Aged,
$2880; The Community Center Association, $3500; Jewish Education Commission
$170; and the Community Relations Council, $1800. The cost of the Emigre project
was $11,000. Schwartz announced the complete roster of the Allocations
Committee as follows: Dr. Robert M. Stone, Louis Moorsteen, Eli H. Levenson,

community of San Diego, the 1951 United Jewish Fund Campaign plans, and the
approval of the budget of local agencies as presented by the Federation of
Jewish Agencies.
March 16, 1951—1)"Women's Committee Formed for 1951 Drive," Southwestern
Jewish Press, page 1: New faces—new ideas—backed by a campaign cabinet
of tried and true campaigners sets the scene for the Women's Division of the
1951 campaign as Rodin Horrow and Morris Douglas, chairmen, announced that Mrs.
M.D. Goodrich, Mrs. Abe Ratner and Mrs Al Neumann had accepted the
responsibility of leading the women of San Diego in this great cause.
Plans are being formulated by these three dynamic women which will keep the
record of the women's division at the high level of previous years. In the 4
years of its existence, women of San Diego have given over $134,000 to the
United Jewish Fund of San Diego. First gathering of women on behalf of the drive
was held yesterday as key workers gathered at the El Cortez to discuss methods
and plans of organization, the chairmen announced. Mrs. Goodrich stated that the
campaign would again be sparked by the Women's Special Gifts Luncheon to be
given by Mrs. Selma Getz on Wednesday, Mar. 28, at the El Cortez. Guest of honor
will be Mrs. S. A. Brailove, chairman National Women's Division, United Jewish
Appeal, who will come to San Diego especially for the affair. Over 400 women
will be invited to luncheons on Wednesday, April 11, which has been designated
as Women's "Blue Feather" Day. They will gather at various homes to
hear the plea of the Fund's 1951 Combined Jewish Appeal. Besides the three
chairmen, the campaign cabinet for the Women's Division will contain Mrs.

Jewish Press, page 1: The task of studying budget requests of the various
beneficiary agencies of the United Jewish Fund of San Diego will start shortly,
it was announced this week. In preparation for this undertaking, Chairman
William Schwartz of the Allocation Committee, is preparing the material to be
sent to all members of the committee, who were appointed by Victor Schulman
before the 1951 Campaign opened. Members of the committee assisting
Chairman Schwartz are Dr. R.M. Stone, Louis Moorsteen, Eli H. Levenson, Mrs.
Gabriel Berg, Sol Price, Abe Ratner, Arthur Gardner, Harry Snyder and Rubin
Umansky, members of the Fund Board of Directors. Other members are Mrs. David

September 14, 1951—"'New American' Family
Arrives," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 1: A thirty-one year old
refugee with five years experience in one of the most dreaded Nazi concentration
camps arrived in San Diego last week to begin a new life as an American. Aleks
Majtlis climbed down the steps of the Santa Fe train with his wife, Klara, and
his two year old son, Ignatz, to be met by Mrs. Gabriel Berg, Zel Camiel, Mrs.
Henrietta Rubenstein, Mrs. Harris Rubel and Al Hutler. (see photo below).
Majtlis' family has been assured housing and employment by the United Jewish
Fund. The apartment in which they are residing in Golden Hill was secured and
furnished through the efforts of the San Diego Section of the National Council
of Jewish Women, and their adjustment and integration into the community of San
Diego will be under the direction of the Jewish Welfare Society. The new
American stated that he had been a tailor's assistant for three years in his
native Poland when he was seized by the Germans. As a Jew, he was sent for
forced labor to the concentration camps from which he only emerged when the war
ended. For the past five years he has lived and worked in D.P., Camps. In
January, 1947, he and married Klara, a fellow D.P. of Russian origin and their
son was born two years later. Sponsorship by the united Jewish Fund was given
under the terms of the D.P. Act and was arranged through the United Service for
New Americans, one of the beneficiary agencies of the United Jewish Appeal. The
USNA have helped IRO and the D.P. Commission to find jobs and homes in the
United states for over 200,000 World War refugees. The program of resettlement
of D.P.'s in San Diego is completely financed by contributions to the United
Jewish Fund.
September 28, 1951—"Hadassah Exhibits Israel

Hadassah launches its 1951-52 season next Friday, October 5th, with a
spectacular and unusual event—Fashion Forecasts from Israel....All clothes in
the show have been designed by artistic students at Hadassah's Fashion Institute
in Jerusalem. Mrs. E. Al Slayen, who assumes the Presidency for a second term of
office, has issued personal invitations to all Zionist organizations and their
members plus Presidents of all other Jewish women's organizations in our city.
Additional guests will include many of San Diego's leading ladies' ready-to-wear
buyers and store owners who have been keeping an interested eye on the Israel
fashion market. Preceding the affair, first of its kind ever presented here, a
delectable luncheon featuring favorite Jewish dishes will be served under the

Nasatir Report," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 1: San Diego Jewry
will have its first opportunity in over a year to hear Ida Nasatir on Wednesday,
October 24, 8:00 p.m. at Beth Israel Temple. A reception and meeting sponsored
by all of the Jewish organizations of San Diego through the Presidents' Council
will "welcome home" Dr and Mrs. A.P. Nasatir after an absence of 15
months spent in Western Europe and in Israel. One month spent in the cities,
kibbutzim, and desert of Israel; her visits to various institutions supported by
American money through Hadassah, the Pioneer Women and Mizrachi Women; her
ability to mix with the "little men and women" of Israel gave her a
background of material which comes to very few. An ability to dramatically
picture her observations, the things she and Dr. Nasatir have seen and done; and
to frame them in beautiful language easily understood by all, has made Ida
Nasatir one of the outstanding women speakers on the Pacific Coast. Her
unbiased, unprejudiced dramatic report of Israel today should be the major event

Jewish Press, page 6: Mrs. Al Slayen, President of Hadassah extends her
thanks and appreciation of the local chapter for the wonderful support given by
the community at the Fashion from Israel showing. Over 300 women were in
attendance plus many well known fashion-wise professionals. Everyone in
attendance gave their hearty approval of the magnificent designs and this
project of Hadassah has proved itself to be a most worthy one. Mrs. G.

"Fund Board Approves Allocation Report:
Distributes $143,000." Southwestern Jewish Press, pages 1,5: Over
$143,000 was distributed to non-local agencies last week by the directors of the
United Jewish Fund at their regular October meeting, according to Victor
Schulman, President. Included in the amount distributed is $10,475.00, available
surplus from 1950, which had not been allocated in that year. Nathaniel Ratner,
Treasurer of the Fund, stated that under the present regulations of the United
Jewish Fund all available surplus must be distributed. Based on the report
and recommendations of the 1951 Allocations Committee, headed by William
Schwartz, the board distributed $131,240 to overseas and Israel agencies in
comparison with $124,500 in 1950. Community Relations agencies remain almost the
same as in 1950. Religious institutions were allocated $2,483, an overall
increase of $305. Cultural agencies remained about the same, and Service and
Coordinating agencies increased from $1,613 to $2.555. According to the accepted
report the largest percentage increase was the National Jewish Welfare Board for
its war service activities from $1,084 to $2,000. Other increases included the
U.I.T. Campaign for the Weizmann Institute, Technion, and the Hebrew University;
the Jewish Theological Seminary; the Hebrew Union College; Yeshiva University;
Union of Orthodox Congregations; Jewish War Veterans; American Association of
Jewish Education, and the Jewish Labor Committee. Further Action of
the Board—At its meeting last Wednesday, the Board of Directors of the Fund
also voted authority to its Executive Committee to send additional money to the
United Jewish Appeal in its $35,000,000 cash campaign. (United Jewish Fund has
already forwarded $102,000 cash to the UJA.) Reiterated its resolution
favoring the Israel Bond Drive and again offered its cooperation.
Re-elected Albert A. Hutler, as Executive Director of the United Jewish Fund for
another 2 year period beginning January 1, 1952. Hutler has served as the
Executive Director for the past five years. Appointed the following committees:

2) "Nasatir's Plea 'Pay Your Pledge'", Southwestern Jewish Press, page
6: "Jews throughout the world look to us in America for help in thier
battle for surival and a new life," Dr. and Mrs. Nasatir told a large and
enthusiastic group of friends welcoming them back to San Diego last Wednesday
evening. Ida Nasatir told her friends gathered at Temple Beth Israel that the 15
months spent in France and in Israel had a tremendous effect on their thinking.
Speaking of Jewish life in Paris among the refugees, she told of the work of
such organizations as the Joint Distribution Committee and of ORT, both
supported by the United Jewish Appeal. Israel as she and Dr. Nasatir saw it was
powerfully described when she compared it with the squalor and the miserable
existence of refugees in the Paris that she so well knew. "Though we will
never understand how the Jews of Israel were able to do what they have
done," Mrs. Nasatir expressed a great hope that with our aid to the UJA,
Bonds for Israel, and private investment, people of Israel will be able to do
even more. The Nasatirs concluded by asking everyone who had not as yet paid
their pledge to do so immediately because the most important thing in Israel
today was the American dollars. The meeting and reception which followed was
under the sponsorship of the Presidents' Council and its organizations. Mrs.

its arrangements by Mrs. Ethel Berwin, President of Birdie Stodel B'nai B'rith

2) "Bond Group Swings Into
Action to Prepare for Bond Rally," Southwestern Jewish Press, page

than forty women representing all the Jewish organizations in San Diego met at
Temple Beth Israel for a first "Miracle Sunday" drive to start the
Israel Bond Weeks proclaimed by Acting Mayor Schneider. After breakfast and an
address by the charming Mrs. Sidney Slotkin of Los Angeles, Vice President of
Hadassah in Los Angeles and Chairman of Women for B.I.G. in Los Angeles, all the
women rang door bells to sell the "Miracle" to the community.
Marie Berg, Chairman of the Women's Division, Murray Goodrich and Louis Steinman
also added words of encouragement to the volunteer Bond Salesmen. The following
women participated: Mrs. Eleanor Gordon, Pioneer Women; Mrs. Bertha Veitzer,
Labor Zionists; Mrs. Esther Cole, Beth Jacob Auxiliary; Mrs. Minnie Harris,
Hadassah, and Mrs. Joseph Krone ($4050.00 was collected). Rabbis Morton J. Cohn,
Baruch Stern and Monroe Levens acted as a joint committee in this bond campaign
as "special salesman." According to Murray Roman, So. Calif. Bond
Manager, more than 60 people attended special meetings at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Murray Goodrich last Monday night. The home of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Steinman
last Tuesday night was also the scene of another committee to spark the
enthusiasm for the sale of Israel bonds.

January 11, 1952—"C.J.F. W. Holds Western Conference," Southwestern Jewish
Press, page 5: Full analysis and joint action on issues currently
confronting Jewish communities will feature the 1952 Western States Regional
Assembly of the Council of Jewish Federation and Welfare Funds to be held
January 18029 at the Lafayette Hotel in Long Beach, according to Eli H. Levenson,
Regional Vice President, who is chairman of the Program Committee. Opening
the intensive examination of issues will be the all day session on Friday,
January 18, when discussion will take place on "New Directions in Planning
for Local Services," at which Morris Douglas, vice president of the Fund,
will be the Workshop Leader. Mr. Levenson, whose name has been placed in
nomination for the presidency of the region, will act as chairman of the
Saturday evening dinner meeting when Sydney Hollander of Baltimore will lead a
discussion of "Community Relations and the MacIver Report." The
Sunday, January 20th morning session will feature a workshop on fund raising and
budgeting in which successful campaigning and budgeting techniques will be
discussed. Time will also be spent on the Israeli Bond sales and its
implications for the 1952 Welfare Fund Campaign. Albert A. Hutler, Executive
Director of the Fund, will be the professional consultant in this session.
Besides those participating in the program of the conference, many community
leaders from San Diego are planning to attend. Among them are Mrs. Gabriel Berg,
Victor Schulman and Murray D. Goodrich.
February 8, 1952—"Mrs. Jack Gross Names
Chairman of Women's Division; Mmes. Mallen, Schulman, Strauss To Assist," Southwestern
Jewish Press, page 1: Mrs. Jack Gross this week joined her husband in
the leadership of the coming United Jewish Fund campaign by being the chairman
of the Women's Division. The appointment was announced by the Women's Division
cabinet consisting of Past Chairmen Mmes. M.D. Goodrich, Abe Ratner, Al Neuman,
Gabriel Berg, Nathaniel Ratner, A.P. Nasatir, George Neumann, Saul Chenkin,
Selma Getz, and Louis Steinman....
February 22, 1952—"Cost of Emigre Program Announced," Southwestern
Jewish Press, page 7: Three additional DP units will arrive in San Diego for
resettlement, according to news from United Service for New Americans.
Aboard the SS General Blatchford, arriving in New Orleans and destined
for San Diego on the assurances of the United Jewish Fund, are Joseph Hoffman, a
29 year old tailor; Alfred Tevjovits, 223 year old laborer; and Werner Kukules,
31 year old hatter, his wife, Ruth, and son, Manfred, 1 year old. Dr. Walter
Ornstein, chairman of the emigre committee and his co-chairman, Mrs. Gabriel
Berg, reported that the cost of the local program for Displaced Persons in 1951
was $12,216.33 as follows: Cash Assistance, $5815.01; Rents $3040.40; Medical
Care $1154.99; Drugs $345.49; Clothing $389.09; Furniture $577.39; Freight
$138.71; Utilities $40.75; Council House $294.07; Miscellaneous $257.03; Loans
$64.00. Total, $12,216.22. Already two new units, toward a quota of 20
families, have been resettled in San Diego in 1952. The Emigre Resettlement
program in San Diego is completely financed through the Combined Jewish Appeal
of the United Jewish Fund which will open its drive on April 1, 1952.
March 21, 1952—"Women's Division Announce $25,840
Raised To Date," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 4: Results of the
$100,00 minimum luncheon held in the Don Room of the El Cortez Hotel thrilled
everyone as Loretta Gross announced that $8,745 was raised from 76 women
present. As campaign plans for the official opening on April 1st began to
unfold, the Women's Division had $25,840 towards its drive to gather $40,000 as
its share of the $272,146 goal in San Diego. "Change a tent into a
home for Israel women" in this year of the great Homemaking was the plea
made by Mrs. Kurt Laemmle, National United Jewish Appeal leader. Lucky winner of
the "Edith Small" Original Suit was Ann Ratner. A "Michel
Original" Suit, donated by Gladys Scott Smart Shop was also on display. It
will be awarded to the holder of the lucky door prize at the $25 minimum
luncheon on April 1st in the Don Room of the El Cortez Hotel. Hostesses for the
Luncheon were Mesdames Gabriel Berg, Saul Chenkin, Selma Getz, M.D. Goodrich,
Jack Gross, Rodin Horrow, Estelle Levi, Harry Mallen, Louis Moorsteen, Al
Neumann, George Neumann, Sol price, Abe Ratner, Nathaniel Ratner, Victor
Schulman, Harry Snyder, Louis Steinman and Robert Strauss.
April 18, 1952—"Hadassah," Southwestern Jewish Press, page
2: Local Hadassah members are looking forward to attending the Seventh
Annual Conference of the Southern Pacific Coast Region of Hadassah, which will
take place May 5th, 6th and 7th, at the arrowhead Springs Hotel at San
Bernardino, California. Mrs. Joseph Gleisher of Westwood, California, Conference
Chairman, has announced that Mrs. Benjamin Gottesman, National Education
Chairman of Hadassah, will be mentor for the entire conference, and will address
the concluding banquet on Wednesday, May 7, 1952. This meeting will be one of
the highlights of the conference. During workshops, attention will be given both
to Hadassah's role in aiding Israel, and the correlation between its work there
and its work here on the American Jewish scene. San Diegans planning to attend
the conference are Mrs. E. Al Slayen, president of the San Diego Chapter, and
Mesdames Gabriel Berg, David Block, Alfred Bobrof, Edward Kitaen, Harry Felson,
