I would say that beyond his profound discovery of the polio vaccine (which has reduced polio incidence to nearly zero worldwide) and as the founder of the Salk Institute, he has contributed positively to the day-to-day life of the Jews of San Diego today. The La Jolla before Salk and other physicians/scientists who were attracted to UCSD by Dr. Roger Revell, was restricted and myopic. My feeling is that none of the freedom in lifestyle for the Jewish San Diego population would be possible without the contributions of Salk and others.—Peter Levine, PhD
