Honoree
Melia Bensussen
Honored by Cynthia Citron, Encino, Calif., August 3, 2005
As a theater reviewer, I've chosen to honor Melia
Bensussen, director and teacher. As a director she is well-known on Broadway and
has won an Obie, the top honor for off-Broadway productions. As a teacher, she
is producing director of Emerson Stage at Emerson College in Boston. Born in New
York in 1963, she grew up in Mexico City, where she went to a Zionist/Jewish
school that conducted its classes in Spanish and Hebrew. Eventually she
and her parents, Isaac and Abot, and her siblings Jake, Willy, and Becky
returned to America and settled in San Diego, where her parents and sister Becky
still live. Her years in Mexico City have stayed with her, however, and she is
still heavily involved with Latino theater and playwrights. Her first job
in New York, in fact, was with Festival Latino, a wing of Joseph Papp's Public
Theater. For her ties to both Jewish and Latino cultures, which reflects the
cultural mix in San Diego, I am proud to recommend her as an honoree of the
Louis Rose Society.
